This was my primary concern too. I'm not a 100% audiophile, but I like my music and I have pretty sensative ears.
The quality is surprisingly good. I think that there might be a little bit more of the very high frequency compression artifacts in loud portions of the music than normal, but not enough to make me wince. I listen to my mp3s on a decent pair of Koss earbuds, and I can't hear much (if any) degradation in overall quality. Granted, my Koss's aren't e5cs or anything... but they get the job done. :)
My only guess about how they did this was that they were aware that this could be a problem and took step to prevent it. I know that through DSP, it is possible to sort of 'acoustically uncompress' mp3s... perhaps TuneBite runs an algorithm like that before the signal hits the mp3 compression portion of the program.
However they do it, I was pleased with the results.
