I owned a Toshiba e750, and it had usb hosting (along with a number of flaws). I did get USB hosting to work, but I never really put it to much use. However I did find something useful for other PDA owners. using rosco file explorer 2003 and pocketmind pocketmusic you can do the following.
Using a PC hooked up to wifi, share a folder full of MP3s
enable 'my network places' in rosco
then using pocketmusic open the shared folder
--- you now have 20GB of mp3s available to you, they will stream flawlessly on a 400Mhz toshiba with only a 1-2 sec delay, the only problem is pocket music takes a while to load all of the ID3 tags, and while it took at most a few minutes, my drive to school was only 15min.
*note, if this is public forum knowledge, just direct me to that post, I am a newbie so please be kind.
I will update this post as soon as I find out more.
I would like to get a wifi enabled 20GB hard drive installed in my car, so when my PDA is with me I can not only listened to streamed songs while driving, i can also copy them to my SD card so i can listen to them between classes.
unrelated, does anybody know how to get a cheap microdrive that WILl work for the x51v? again I havn't searched all of the posts, but if you know it a quick link is preferred
at least i didn't post a dum / obvious / sarcastic remark on every single post today like most other newbies do
yah.. although this is pretty common knowledge, it might help those who are new to the world of pocket PC.
If you are interested in streaming to your Ax from outside your home network (say your home desktop --> axim on airport wi-fi) then check out the free service from Orb.com.
..and welcome to the site.

Ok, well maybe someone can help me. When I full up my shared folders on my network my X50v locks up and won't respond. I have to soft rest my x50 everytime, so I can never access my mp3s.

How long do you wait? Depending on the number of files in that directory, there could be lag in the file-listing. Plus, if your computer had not been touched in a little, the hard drive will have to turn back on...
Well, it happens every time I try. The last time I tried I plugged the unit into the power cord and left it over night. In the morning it was still locked up and the time and date had never changed.

Nice idea, but I doubt if it's feasible
Do you have access to a wifi hotspot while in your car? if not, I guess you'l have no way to get your PDA and hard drive connected via wifi.
Actually I don't quite understand why you want to get a wifi enabled hard drive for storage. Since your toshiba PDA can do USB hosting, a hard drive with USB interface is good enough and cheaper, isn't it?

What are you talking about, its totaly feasible. You just need to build a really small formfactor, energy efficent PC. I recomend something like a VIA C3 processor\motherboard at 1 GHz w\ PCMCIA card slot for the 802.11 b card. Then throw in some memory (256 MB will do) and as big a hard drive as you need. Then your all good to go. You can connect the computer and the Pocket PC using Ad-Hoc.
After installing Windows\Linux and setting it up you dont need a display or an optical drive. Then get one of those Cigarette Lighter power adaptors to power it. I also recommend using an external hard drive for the system so you can take the data with you when you need it. An in dash external SD\CF card reader would also be a nice touch.
If you needed to access the computer you could just use z2 Remote 2PC or some other VNC program to control it right from your pocket pc.
This would be cool, you would have to use a PCI 802.11 b card or usb adaptor. Then get a PCMCIA wireless data card and hook up with an unlimited data plan. Your car would be a mobile WiFi hotspot. Man this is sweet, I totaly want to build one of these. I just need a car.

Yeah check out ebay. If you get a Hitachi Microdrive make sure its the retail version with the colour label. Not the OEM version with the white label. The sellers on eBay are sneaky, many show the image of the retail microdrive but send the OEM.
If you get a Seagate Micrrodrive make sure it doens't say anything on the back refering to firmware. If it says FW 3.04, it will not work. Look for ones that dont specify a firmaware version. If they dont show an image of the back of the microdrive, ask for a picture.
Here is a few links for some good deals on eBay and other.
I got pocket Music 3 (anything better made yet?), and rosco file explorer working. The trick is go to options in Rosco ,-> addins, show network > check 'as Network' under "my device"'
Pocket Music quest them up just like old school winamp, sorts by artist name, song, album, etc
I just need to find a way to get a NAT (network attached storage) device some how, some way wired up to it. also, the delay is zero, less not even a second. SO freakin cool, also it loaded up 20GB of MP3 in less then 2min, meaning it orgainized them and collected all of the ID tag info.
Anybody know if what i want is even possible, let alone how to do it?
you can build or buy network harddrives just search google they average about one dollar per gigabyte ie: 200 gigabyte ethernet drive cost about 200 dollars
Previous PDAs: Palm M500, Toshiba e335, Axim X50v (run over by car To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. )
