Worried In response to DVD to AVI...PLZ help!!!!!!!!

Aloha to all ,

First off, I have to congratulate fibrizio on a great guide, actually both guides are great.

i have converted most of my divX movies to 320x240 with that other guide but this is my first trial at CONVERTING DVDs to AVIs.

I have some DVDs and i've been trying for ages to convert them to DivX but i have ALWAYS FAILED. I've tried easy encode and smart ripper..always crashed!!
I tried this guide at ripping " The Score " movie to DivX and I finally had my first DivX home made RIP!!
(eventhough it took 7 hours) :crooked:

The only problem though.....ITS size is 1.93GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and not like ~700MBs like the rest of DivX movies??

I followed all the instructions in the guide except for one:

I kept the resolution at 720x480
I did not convert it to 320x240, as i planned on ripping this DVD to an ordinary Divx movie, not for PPC
Should i have not changed that??

The Score's rip properties:

1.93GB

Size:
720x480

Audio:
Duration: 2:08
Bit rate: 1411kps
Audio sample size: 16 bit
Audio format: PCM

Video:
Frame rate: 29fps
Data rate: 272kps
Video sample size: 24 bit
Video compression: DivX codec

Now..by comparing to file properties with other DivX movies..I KNOW these properties are insanely HIGH...that's why the file is about 2GB and took 7 hours!!

What was i supposed to do to get a ~ 700MB file instead of this 2GB file??

OR

How can i convert it now to around 700MB to fit on a CD???
Please advise me??

Thanks...

P.S. of course i have virtual dub and DivX 5.05 and for this conversion i used the "DVD to AVI guide using FlakMPEG 0.95 or something like that"

please confirm your audio info:

bit rate = 1411??
format = PCM??

If so, this is where your problem is, I think. Your have encoded your audio stream in wave format (about 600MB+ per hour, same as audio CD). To reticfy the problem, you need to encode your audio to MP3 format.

I'm no expert; I've just been using fibrizio's guides myself.

I think your problem may be that you're just doing the first step: using FlasK to convert DVDs to AVI. You then should use the second guide to compress the AVI for your Axim.

For instance, I ripped a 3 hour movie -- AVI created was 3.5GB.
Then used second guide to use VirtualDub to rotate, decimate, etc. Final result was a 270MB AVI file which plays beautifully on my Axim.

Ripping on my system only takes about half as long as yours seems to be taking, but that may be due to processor speed (I'm using a 2.4GHz Pentium).

Hope I haven't mis-interpretted your post. Regards,

gaffer

Oops. Reread your post. Saw that it's not meant for Axim. Sorry.

thanks for all the replies guys..
yeah...its not meant for the Axim...that is done by the other guide..

I just want a AVI file ~ 700MB and not 2GB....

You say that my audio has been ripped in Wav format and not MP3..well...OK..

In what part of fibrizio's guide do i use MP3 encoding instead of Wav??

Did you try media encoder to convert that file into a WMA file ? If all you wanna do is to watch the movie over the Axim, WMA file should be just fine and the the MS Media Encoder 9 can make them real small in size if you covert using the Pocket PC option.

Like I said before, I'm a novice at this, so excuse my ignorance.

But have you thought of going through fibrizio's second step (using virtualdub), keeping the resolution high, decimating every other frame (or more), and compressing the sound? Would that do what you're wanting to do?
