Is there a "best" target AVI file size when ripping DVD to a vga (640x480) screen? By "best" I mean a balance between quality and file size. It would be nice if there was an equation like 100MB per 30 minutes!
Yikes! I usually encode mine to 970MB per file so I can fit 2 on a 2GB card. I know it's overkill for an Axim, but since I have 2 Divx-certified DVD players in the house, I can slap 4 files on a DVD and watch them on a larger screen in the house.

Around 700 MB is good I think. I usually hook my Axim to an external display so for vids, high quality also comes in handy.
700mb is the standard for most movie to divx backups (so its fits on 1 cd-r). However since we use axims I would say for a movie I usually try and use about a 700kbps compression rate on the video (sometimes lower) and about 128kbps compression rate for the audio.
I'm not sure about you guy's but i've tested dvd ripping and the like for the past 6 month's and i think i've found a filesize for Fairuse wizard. Before i use to rip the full DVD and then recompress down to 500mb, but now i find that by ripping directly to 300mb for a 2 hour movie works beautifully. (remember this is for VGA screens not VGA-out on external monitors.) Thus my equation is 75mb = 30min or 150mb = hour. I'll do a e-z guide for this and comparisons on www.smartmobileassets.com sometime soon.
