Copying MP3s from PC to Axim

Hi All:

I am trying to figure out the best way to copy mp3s (and some wmas) from my PC to my Axim SD card. I did a search through the forums here and it seemed that copy and paste was the technique most often mentioned. I was a little surprised by that, so I thought I'd ask the question directly: How do you copy or move your music files from your PC to your Axim?

It seemed to be the best solution would be to copy files via playlists. I use Music Match Jukebox (Ver 7.5), which purports to have a generic Pocket PC portable device plug in, on my PC. However, I have not been able to get it to recognize my SD card while in the Axim. IIn fact, it thinks my Axim is a Jornada).

I have looked at Winamp, but it did not appear to have a free plugin or component for transferring files (please correct me if I am wrong on that!). I guess I would be willing to buy an add-on if I heard from you all that it worked really well for this purpose.

It seemed to me that copy and paste via ActiveSync is painfully slow. I guess I could use a card reader, but my file structure is not well organized and It would be much better to use a playlist to transfer if at all posssible.

So, how do you do it? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The newest version of Windows Media Player has a Transfer to portable device tab. It works well and you can select music by playlists.

I use it and it sees my CF, SD and interal storage

Thanks, Kitehog.

I had neglected to mention that I was trying to stay away from WMP on the desktop. I had installed it on the desktop one or two versions ago and it seemed to creep into all sorts of undesired areas, stealing file associations and resulting in problems with other programs. Also, even though I thought Ihad turned DRM (Digital Rights Management) off, somehow it had become activated, and after a system crash I lost the ability to play a lot of the music I had (legally!) copied from my CDs. It was an unhappy experience.

But you're right -- it did a great job of organizing and moving files to my Pocket PC.

Like you, WMP was not my player of preference ... until the current release. I think that they have straightened out their act and now it is the match of Real Player and MM Jukebox. IMO, the way it handles playlists is superior to those two.

I was impressed enough to invest $20 in the Digital Media Plus! (or whatever it is called) from MS. This makes synching the music and even limited video content a breeze.

Well, I'm back again. Looks like I'm stuck with WMP 7.1 on the desktop unless I want to upgrade to a new version of Windows. The problem is that it insists on transcoding my mp3 files to wmp. Is there a setting somewhere that will shut this off? I haven't been able to find it.

If you ever once use a card reader to (swiftly) copy/paste files to a CF/SD card, you'll forever cringe when thinking about using the slow Activesync for file transfers. Multicard readers are cheap. Saw my 6-n-1 Lexar reader at Wally World is now below 30 bucks!

That's kinda funny, I also played with that this week-end.
I played with Media Jukebox, liked it and am considering using it as my main digital music app. The media librairies features are really neat (and far superior to those of winamp). The only issue is to send music files to the Axim. Would'nt be nice to to use the Windows Copy/Paste.

I got the 'PDA' plugin and I can now see my Axim in the Media Jukebox. However, when I try to export music files to my Axim, it tries to uplod them to the RAM and runs out of available memory. I could not find a way to tell the app to upload the files to the CF card by default.

Maybe someone knows how to do it ?

Bump

I have the exact same question. I've been looking for a while for a solution where i can take a winamp playlist, copy it to my x50v, and have it copy over my mp3 files. It's such an inefficient solution to try copy/paste in explorer. Does anyone have any suggestions about a way to accomplish this? There has to be something out there....

Thanks.
