basics for watching DVDs on Axim

Hello,

I have ready the stickies and some posts, but the methods, while detailed, are a bit beyond anything I have done.

1) What is the final format for watching DVDs on the axim? WMV? AVI?

2) It seems that many pieces of software are needed... I haven't any experience with any of them. Is there a common selection/path of software to use?

3) I guess I am looking for a real basic cookbook approach. First do this, then do this, then do this. The threads I have read seem to do that but between the acronyms and casual references to software I have never heard of I am getting quite lost. Is their a simple mapped out procedure for this?

Sorry if I am so lame at this, but I would really like to watch some DVDs on the axim and don't know were to begin beyond... step one, insert DVD :rolling:

Meny thanks.

The easiest way would probably be to use Fairuse. It's free and no other software is required. A tutorial can be found here.

Hello Gigi...

I have had helpful posts from you before, and this one looks like it is as well. I only took a quick peek at the tutorial but it looks spot on. As always thank you M8.

Well I had a chance to read through the tutorial and it does seem really straight forward...

I am unsure about one line from the beginning of the article...

"you can click Options and enable the included codecs or you can leave it in the default value and use the DivX / XviD codecs that you already have in your system. The program has a few bugs (I had troubles when working with the included XviD codecs) but it works OK. Note that you may also need an ASPI layer if you have not installed one yet! "

Does it matter which codec I select for the Axim v50 and do I need to worry about the ASPI?

Many tanks.

Not WMP? For some reason I thought that would do the trick....

WMP will do the trick but TCPMP (Beta Player) is a btter program for DVD playback. Most importantly it takes advantage of the Axim's video card, which WMP does not. TCPMP is also a free program. I think you'll like it if you try it.

Also, I know it costs a little money (not free like Fairuse), but Pocket DVD Studio is another great program for putting DVDs on your Axim. I believe there's a coupon floating around for it, too. (CHeck Geekzone). You can try the program over at Handango.

Good luck with your movies!

OK, I got it ripped, and am following the tutorial, but there are some mismatches between the screen shots and the software.

1) Do I need to choose a resolution? 320/240 and 640/480 are not listed. The defualt shows no choice selected and will let me proceed as is. What do you think I should do?

2) There is a size option, do I need to concern myself with this? It is a 700MB by defualt. Is this the size of the final file or just a buffer type thing? Putting movies on 1GB SD cards will get pretty expensive. It was my understanding that the final size would be <256MB.

3) This part is really foreign to me... under audio encodings one window defaults to AC3 while the option for audio 1 defaults to MP3 (AC3 is an option here) The audio is also set for 128Kb/s; would lower save space at a reasonable reduction to sound quality?

So far this is not to bad, but I do want to make sure that I have the options set right here as the next stage is rather lengthy to have to repeat
