Actually me and a friend who are pretty big into home theater stuff are pretty pissed Microsoft doesn't just release a free or low cost ($30) MediaCenter edition add on for current XP installations. All MCE really is, besides a few minor things, is an add-on to mediaplayer.
I know this is off subject, but as everyone knows, MCE is OEMs only. But, Microsoft changed the rules for what defines an OEM. Now, purchasing a mouse now makes you a OEM. You can get MCE for $119 if you buy a $5 mouse.

I just downloaded MortButtons, Its really great, you can easily make your own thumb menus ( you dont need your stylus), and you can even use it as Explorer.
I think that would take the Movie or music loader function.
MortButtons is a great program, but I don't like the toolbar at the bottom showing

I've been looking at the GSPlayer code (I don't care too much for a pretty GUI for videos) to see how feasible a simple change in GUI would be, and right now, it looks pretty difficult ... I still need to sort out exactly where all the gui code is... and I don't have much free time, but I'll see what I can do
on the subject of Window MediaCenter, Ebay has a number of sets of a remote control and keyboard and software for $150

MCE is not OEM. Microsoft released MCE 2005 which is downloadable through MSDN subscriptions. I installed it on my homemade computer with no problems at all. Just have to have the right video card before hand. (hint, hint)
BTW, love the idea for a MediaCenter like app for our Axims. What apps out there play both music and movies?
I've fiddling with PC based front ends for a couple of years now and there are quite a few free ones about. Just nothing for pocket pc. I would love one, and happily pay for a good quality app. Just keep it simple and put loads of effort into the look and feel is all I can offer at the moment
If you need some inspiration then have a look at meedio, xlobby etc and you can see what these guys have been trying to perfect
I think this is an awesome idea and I would definitely buy something like this. I am thinking that it should have a "pen mode" and "finger mode" with fatter buttons. Also, it would be cool if it had some of the menu animation found in MediaCenter. That, plus the capability to play videos, music, and pictures would make this a really cool app. In order to make this really cool I think it shouldn't just be a static skin. But I'm thinking that probably making a fancy animated menu system might be too much (or maybe the programming tools are not available).
It would rock. I'd help anyway I can. I'm just an intermediate VB.NET programmer (for the most part), and havent done much work with mediaplayers outside of using windows media sdk :-P If any more talented programmer needs help though, I can help with basics.

You'd rather spend another $500 on yet ANOTHER device(i.e. Creative or whatever) that does everything your current one already does? Hell, I bet the X50v will still out perform a proprietary MediaCenter device.
Communities are a conglomeration of individuals(with similar needs and hopes) helping one another. I can't, for the life of me, accept that noone here has the skills to put something like this together...let alone make a valiant effort to at least throw together a basic app.
I'm not a programmer...hence why I am not coding this myself. I'm an artist, so the GUI is something I would happily take on.
I've been looking at this thread and at TCPMP's development.
Have you by the way checked out Microsoft's Origami project (aka. Ultimate Mobile Personal Computers (UMPC))?
They have very flashy good looking menu's. I hope this will be somehow possible with TCPMP or any other application.
Having images that change to other images on touch is good but rather boring .
Don't know how other Pocket PC's would be able to handle flashy interfaces, but our Axim's can do it all for sure.

I kinda rushed this and jacked the icons off the internet, but what about something like this for the media player.
something simple and very very very stylus/finger friendly. i don't have time to make a general music skin or a movie/photo skin but i'll put together something a little later.
edit:
oh and here's a general idea of what it would look like on a pda(i know i know its not a ppc, but hey it's a pda)
sorry for the bad pic quality
