I have had problems with audio matching the video when I followed the original postings of how to Capture DVD and then reencode for the Axim.

Then I tried Windows Media Encoder, whow! No problems with the audio then and with a little tweaking it looks great, but a little dark and a little skipping.

So today, I tried reencoding using VirtualDub again, this time I just did a straight copy with the audio and used decimation and the Divx codec on Original 1 Pass and added a filter to boost the brightness. I used 1.75 (after trying 2.0 and 1.5)

Then I used the result through Windows Media player.

I know it is one more step, but since Media player doesn't have a brightness/contrast controls this step allows me to watch movies outside of a darkened room and see the details.

Its very simple folks, If you have any problems w/ audio syncing the first thing you should do is open the file you want to encode in Virtdub. Go to file, and hit save wav. This will save the audio file in a clean CBR. (constant bite rate) Then Follow the guide found on:

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&threadid=3692

When doing the audio, in the audio menu choose the option to get audio from from wav (rather then from source which is choosen by default). Choose wav, and browse to where the wav file you saved early is. Do this and encode your video and it will keep sync. That is to say as long as your original video was in sync, or you dont trim the video after encoding. If you really want to trim a video I suggust first taking AVIsplitter, cutting it up in that, saving the file w/ everything cut out and then following the little guide I wrote encode the video.

And w/ AVIsplitter, choose to not rencode the video in AVIsplitter, choose the first option. This will output a file of aprx. the same size as the original, minus the small parts cut out.

You can also add skew to the file, and attempt to add in xseconds of delay or take out x senconds of delay (note Vdub wants time in miliseconds, do some math)

Hope this helps, msg me if your still stuck I might be able to help

Actually it's not that simple. If you've read the beginning posts, the videos are only out of sync when played on the Pocket PC, which indicates a CPU issue, not an encoding issue.

If the a/v is out of sync regardless of the platform it is being played on, then your solution is correct.

well if i use LAME 128bit , stereo, 44khz and 100kbit video it plays fine. .with no dropped frames, as soon as i bump up video to 128 kbps i start gettin dropped frames ( say like 70 out of 3000 frames which isn't too bad, like 2% loss).. gotta play around with some more audio settings still

Whoah!

I'm only using Lame 128kbps if I'm encoding video in the 250kbps range to maintain sync. If I do 100-ish kbps video, I can use the mono audio settings just fine.

talyn, are you saying that you can use 250kbps video, and 128kbps audio (stereo) at full 320x240 res and not have massive dropped frames? I've got my axim overclocked to 400 but still if i run at that i'm sure i'd loose a ton of frames.

Yeah I have the 400Mhz model anyway, but I do 250 DivX & 128 stereo MP3 and barely drop any frames. I use whatever screensize I can get for landscape mode (rotated in VDub) after resizing & cropping. Isn't always full screen to get the full widescreen aspect ratio obviously.

However: I still have not encoded a full movie yet, still only trailers or short animations/movies that are a few minutes in length. I think the longest one is in the 7 minute range? I don't wanna tie up the 'puter for hours until I get the settings just the way I want 'em.

wow.. i'll have to try out 250kbps and see what happens. the stuff i'm playing is taken from tv captures or or other 4:3 aspect ratio so it's full screen, maybe that's why i'm getting some dropped frames. are you getting zero dropped frames? can you post how many dropped v.s. total frames you're getting ?

Sure, here are the results for 3 vids I did recently:

All are rotated, that's why the screen size is "backwards" :) And all are encoded at 250kbps DivX and 128kbps @ 44Khz stereo MP3 using the Lame codec.

I played each movie 3 times, and took the average dropped frames for this post.

NBrigadeTheHero (a Battlefield 1942 fan-made movie):
Screen: 212x320
Size: 23.2mb
FPS: 15
Total Frames: 7618
Dropped Frames: 83

Delgo Trailer
Screen: 180x230
Size: 7.73mb
FPS: 12
Total Frames: 2048
Dropped Frames: 2

City of Heroes Trailer
Screen: 240x320
Size: 9.9mb
FPS: 15
Total Frames: 3250
Dropped Frames: 10

Here is 2 more, but these were sized to fit on the normal screen with the skin intact (encoding at a 240 width will take the skin off and switch to a 'blank' fullscreen mode for some reason).

Grand Theft Auto 3 trailer
Screen: 236x120
Size: 2.31mb
FPS: 24
Frames: 1452
Dropped: 4

GTA Vice City trailer
Screen: 236x128
Size: 2.79mb
FPS: 15
Frames: 906
Dropped: 0

ok i played the first few mins of a futurama episode (including the intro which has a lot of fast moving stuff in it) and here's what I get (it's 320x240, 128kbit audio (lame) and 128kbit video (divx 5 2 pass etc..)

Total frames: 3061
Dropped: 26
Average FPS: 14.86

After doing some encoding for portrait view rather than landscape, so far everything stays synched if I use 22khz mono for audio, just like fibizio's guide does, and this is with 300kbps divx!

But once I switch to landscape view, I still need to use stereo (normally 128kbps with Lame) or I lose audio sync within a few seconds.

On another note: I'm reading that over time the normal Fraunhofer codec will lose sync on longer movies, no matter what you do to it. I haven't encoded a full movie yet so I can't make any comments on it based on personal experience.

Yeah, I've been doing the same with portrait. I use 220kbit video with full framerate, convert audio to 22khz, and use the normal fraunhofer codec at 56kbit 22khz stereo. So far I've watched 3 or 4 simpsons and futurama episodes and they play perfect from beginning to end with no sync issues. The audio sounds great with headphones on.. i see no need to really bump the audio up any more. I encoded a couple chapters of the Xmen dvd and it played back perfect (though only around 10mins). I get 1 or 2 dropped frames at most also which is grreat. file size is about 2mins/min. I guess i'll have to watch a whole movie to see if any syncing issues pop up. so far so good! I really like watching in portrait alot more now than landscape. the picture is so much more even.
