This is actually an older thread, since this one was created PocketMusic has coem out and its pretty superior IMO, I'll look into the streaming stuff on it, they also told me the next version will support more options, so maybe thaty will be included, the good news is that it will support wma and ogg files! :D

When I installed PocketMusic, it associated itself with .pls and .m3u streaming files, but I could never get it to play them. Has anybody been able to stream mp3 files to PocketMusic?

My question for pocketmusic is: Can you map the rocker switch to control the volume?

I assume so but I haven't tried it (This is the Feature Pack):

Powerful player control with hardware buttons (map any action to any hardware button)

well, you could always map it in windows media player, then have the up/down mapped in the background. Without the feature pack, pocket music won't control the volume, but just use the resources you already have.

GS Player seems better to me...

GS Player seems to be the best player so far, IMO. It plays, MP3 files, OGG files, and streaming MP3 (.pls and .m3u) files.

The only popular formats it doesn't play is .wma and Realaudio (I think Realaudio is proprietary, so it may not be possible to put it in a free player).

It's free and you can map keys, etc. It has an equalizer and 3D and Surround Sound effects.

The interface is plain, but easier to work with than the overly busy PocketMusic interface, IMO.

PocketMVP would get my vote if they added streaming MP3 support. It has the best interface.

Worried

I have had very good luck with Cardinal Tech's withMP3. I have been downloads MP3s for years, and not all mine have been ripped with the greatest precision until recently when encoded my CD collection (200+ Cds).

Its not freeware, but you get a shareware version that plays for approx 60hrs. Its been the most stable of all players on my Axim (including Pocketmusic and WIMP.)

As far as I know MP3... havent messed around with OGG although I've heard good things... I dont deal with WMAs, and as far as I can see, it doesnt support streaming MP3 (which is something that I am interested in).

Here's an easier link to WinamPAQ (the link above is full of multilingual distractions).
