Personally, I'd use (and do use) MP3. It's a lot more universal, IMO.

Hes right, mp3 works with almost all players, but wma provides better quality.

I'd go for at least 160k
but I use .ogg (vorbis), and use GSPlayer to play

From most of the digital audio player forums I've been in, a very popular setup is ripping with Exact Audio Copy (EAC) and encoding with the LAME mp3 encoder at alt-preset quality. This results in very high quality VBR (variable bit rate) mp3's that play on EVERY mp3 player, as well as the Axim.

OGG Vorbis/ is also quite popular and uses half the space as mp3; however, it is not as portable and uses more power. For example, you won't be able to play your .OGG music on an iPod in the future.

Something important to note - when selecting your bit rate, keep in mind who the audience is, and what it's going to played through. If it's just you and a cheap set of headphones or the on board speakers, there is no point in wasting space on high quality audio you can't hear. If you're an audiophile and playing it through your high end car stereo a lot, then go for better.

But, if you're like me, who can't really distinguish the subtleties sometimes, save your space. I spent too much time in high noise environments in my youth, which affected my ability to detect subtle variations in sound. So, since my music on my Axim is pretty much just for me through my headphones, I tend to rip to the lowest possible bit rate that I can distinguish a difference. Other people who listen to my files complain, but if I can't tell the difference, and I ripped them for me, who cares? Oh sure, there are probably subtle nuances I'm missing, but I'd miss them anyway, so I go for the most music I can fit on an SD card, and still sound decent (to me). On the rare occasions that a particular song doesn't sound good, I go back and rip it to a higher level, until it sounds good

Yes. In WMP (on your desktop) go to Tools\Options\Rip Music Tab and move the slider along the bottom of the window.

I also use 96 kbps which is quite good enough for my old ears. Everyone's hearing progressively deteriorates from the age of about 16.

With good headphones you can tell, but with crappy ones you cant. Acctaully bad bit rates stick out in headphones more than they do in stereos. Im listening to 32kbps streaming radio and it sounds fine on my axims' speaker.

I ripped my first CD to my PPC yesterday. I felt brave and ripped it at a bit rate of 48 (lowest wmp would go) . To me, it sounded fine through my headphones!

Now that I know how to do it, I have to get a CF that is bigger than the 32 mb one that I "borrowed" from my daughters digital camera. Hope that I can get it back before she needs it!!

I have a 2GB SD card that I plan on using for movie files & I plan on purchasing a 512-1GB CF for music.

Any suggestions or comments regarding my plan???

thank you

I have a 2gb sd card and it holds up to 3 hours of high quality video and around 5 albums, but it is now full. A 512mb cf card can only hold about 10 small albums, if you need more than this, then I would suggest getting a 1/2gb card
