Ripping with Shrink DVD & PocketDivxEncoder

I have been unsuccessfully trying to rip DVD's using this guide;

http://www.aximsite.com/articles/link.php?id=215

...but, the finished product won't play on my Axim. It plays on my desktop (without sound). On the Axim it says invalid format (i've tried both the media player and the TCPMP.

Thanks in advance for any advice or direction.

S.

I was trying to do what your trying to do. I had luck using this forum. This is what i have done.

I downloaded the Fair Use program (if you just search it on this forum you'll get the link)

I also downloaded the TCMP program (Again you can search this forum and get the link)

I then purchased a usb CF reader. Using the guide i made the file (it's an .avi file) using Fair Use (free program for download) takes about 2-3hrs for it to do the job. The file created, i simply transfer over to the CF card using the reader (better option then via cradle) and i've had great results.

So Fair Use to convert DVD to the avi file, TCMP to view the file on my axium.

The setting on Fair use i usually tried various settings, the one that worked best was 300mb file created using Fair use for English movies. the voice data i set to 98mHz, the sound is fine.

Good luck, i can only say this forum has worked for me. It's all trial and error. But i can assure you that i'm having a blast.

hope this helps.

Same here. I tried everything until I got to Fairuse. One software does it all. I have a vga screen so I adjus the picture to a setting as close to 640x480 as possible, and I choose 128mp3 sound b/c I have really good headphone. I like to use 475 mb per movie, but I have 4G of storage. It's all personal preference. The only problem I found w/this type of software in general is it takes 3-4 hours to convert a movie, so experimentation is slow.

Let me know if you need help w/fairuse. The first time you use it it may look dificult, but once you've done it a couple times and keep choosing the auto settings for everything but the picture and sound you'll see how easy it is.

ScooterBlues:

I haven't ripped a DVD yet (though I've been planning to since quite some time), but I thought this article: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=70567 was informative and thorough. Hope it helps, All the Best!

You do not have the AC3 code installed, so there is no sound. I got this problem before, once I get the AC3 installed, it works fine.

Scott,
You should check that the volume is not turned down on the computer that you use to rip the dvd with dvd shrink. Also when you load your file to be decoded for the pda, check that it is showing a sound level. I'm assuming about 35-45% depending on what your volume was when you ripped it. Hope this helps

Everybody has there prefered solutions but the easiest one stop solution is FairUse; I've tried others and always come back to it - for VGA allow 100MB per 30 mins and sound at 128 set the screen size as near VGA (640x480) and leave the PC to it. It'll even close the PC down for you if you leave it running overnight doing a movie.:approve:

I use Smart Ripper and PocketDivXEncoder. Both very easy to use and produce great results.

I don't watch videos or movies on my Axim, but I do on my iPod, and after running some tests with some software I found around, I've come to rip the best movies using DVD Decrypter (freeware) to extract the VOB files, then AVS Converter (not freeware) to convert it to mp4 (it can convert to AVI, RAM, SWF, and much more).

I don't know about AVI but the AVS converter has shown much better results and very customizable (size, sound, bitrate, etc...) for the MP4.

If you want to learn how to use DVD decrypter for this job check this tutorial:
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html

When the part of the conversion arrives, you can use the software of your choice (AVS in my case).

I haven't tried this FairUse that some people are talking about, but this is just one more option for you to try.
