What quality did you set for the video encoding (i.e. High Definition, Portable, or Handheld)? What program are you using for the avi playback? Are you running any other programs when playing the file?
Have you tried Fibrizo's encoding process?

For the quality I have it set on "Home Theatre". For playback I use pocket MVP. And I don't have anyother programs running when attempting to playback the file. BTW, When I convert the files using virtual dub they playback fine.

Using PocketMVP the MAX video settings should be:
320x240 (or 240x320 for rotated video)
15-24 FPS (some have had success with 24fps but 15fps is very watchable)
200-300bps bitrate (variable - will inflate file size accordingly)
PMVP is very sensitive to video files outside these parameters, as you have seen. :)

i encoded a 700 mb movie down to 270 with dr.divx but the fps was extremely low and i dont even know if it would work on my axim cause, i dont think its worth trying lol. illl try raiseing the fps this time. o ya and the way dr.divx estimates the time is completely wrong.... it says 40 min but it goes back, like to 50 min and so on instead of moving forward. i think it took a total of a hour and a half.

Apparently, Dr. Divx supports Virtual Dub filters. Does anyone know how to get the ones included with Vdub to work or know where I can find a third party or user created resize and rotate Vdub filter?

Dr Divx works PERFECTLY!
Dr. Divx works PERFECTLY! I prefer a high fps rate to a larger image, and find that at 240x176 I can get a full 30fps WITH STEREO SOUND (I usually use 16khz sample rate in stereo...losing a little bit of extreme high end, but it still sounds quite nice, and in STEREO).
I created a profile for 240x176, 250kbps, progressive output, and mp3 audio at 40kbps stereo, 16khz sample rate.
I have the 300mhz Axim, but using the Speedstepper program to run the processor at 398mhz, the above settings on Dr Divx produces a file that looks like television (again, at 30fps with NO DROPPED FRAMES!) using Pocket MVP.
A little understanding of what video parameters do goes a LONG way! Read as much as you can about compressed video, how it works, the demands on processor power, and specifically about Divx files on PPC. You're only a couple of Google searches away from some very entertaining reading on the subject. And if it doesn't sound like interesting "light reading" to you, perhaps you shouldn't be fiddling with computer video, because it is still very much a tweaker's persuit. Even with a program such as Dr Divx, I have found that the odds of success are directly proportionate to the knowledge of the one creating the file!

Thanks for the info Mike! I've just recently purchased Dr. Divx and am beginning to tweek the settings and am very impressed with how easy it is and how quick it is to encode.
I'm going to try the settings you just posted.
Thanks again!

Great report, Mike! I've downloaded Dr. Divx and hope to get some time this weekend to put it through its paces.
I concur with your comments on "some very entertaining reading" available on the web on video compression. Sometimes frustrating and daunting, sometimes overwhelming - but always interesting!
Keep up the good work and keep sending in the tips!
(side note: I see we are practically neighbors; I call Stokes County, NC home these days.)
Jeff

Note mistake!
Geezer, yes we are practically neighbors! When I did mornings at WIFM in Elkin (100.9fm) I did a remote from a car dealer in King, and had breakfast at Hardees there with my wife a few years ago. I go to Mount Airy often (home town to Andy Griffith, which everybody knows, but also to Donna Fargo, remember her?). It's a small world!
Note I made a mistake originally in my post (but have corrected it). I said I had made a profile that was 240x175. Obviously that's not permitted. My profile is actually 240x176. I corrected the above post, hopefully before causing problems for anyone. (By the way, 240x180 will also work).

Mike, I noticed the typo (240x175) but thought that Dr. Divx may be different. The Divx codec likes height/width settings in multiples of 4/2 respectively. (or is it 2/4 repectively?...too early)
I've been to that Hardee's and I can remember many trips to Mt. Airy, especially the pork chop sandwiches from Snappy Lunch! And at one time, wasn't Ms. Fargo the "happiest girl in the whole USA"? :)

Snappy Lunch!
Awwww, pork chop sandwiches at the Snappy Lunch, with pork chop so big it hangs off the bun on every side. YUM! Now that's eatin'! Damn, we are neighbors, aren't we?
As I recall, there's a surprisingly good little bookstore ("Pages", I think) in downtown Mount Airy. Unusual for a small town, their newsstand carries tons of "tech" related magazines, and the hard and soft cover book selection ain't too shabby!
