Cheers - I've used it a couple of times and seen it can take a few hours... have no problems leaving it overnight but I wondered if I start it off during the daytime and want to use the internet whilst it was encoding would it cause problems with the recording (ie. might cause audio/video to jump or be out of sync)?

Question on resolution for x51 - nonvga

I used fairuse on my x51v and it worked great!

Now I want to try it on my wifes x51 - the resolution in the tutorial says 328 x 128 however this is not available. 320 x 176 I beleive is closest reolution to (320x240). Has anyone tried this setting on x51?
Also can the file size be smaller due to lower resolution or should I still go with the 475 mb?
Thanks.

Firstly, the overall size of the file can be anything you want. So 475mb is just a number. You can make it 300mb or 250mb, for example. Experiment and see what works best. Maybe convert the same movie a few different ways to see how much of a difference it makes. The higher the MB the more quality you retain.

2nd is resolution. On a nonVGA device go as close to 320x240 without going over. The 328x128 won't work b/c 328 is over the limit of 320.

x51

Thanks for the reply. I tried converting a movie with the settings 320x175 (475mb) and their are two black lines on the x51 screen (1/2" wide) on top and below the picture.
How do I get rid of these lines - is this a wrong setting, thanks.

Out of curiosity -if I go larger than the 320x240 - would I just lose part of the picture? Thanks again.

You have to remember that movies are made in wide screen format by the studios. That's the aspect ratio they choose when they make the movie. It rarely works out that you fill your pda screen exactly the right way with the movie, unless you warp the movie. The same thing happens often when you rent DVD's and watch them at home.

If anyone has further info or a better way to do what xbxb says, please volunteer. I consider myself a non-expert, so feel free to ask others as well.

I have no clue. Maybe someone else does. I don't know if it's possible or not.

This write up was EXACTLY what I needed. I've used FairUse to copy 3 DVDs for my upcoming trip. My 4G CF card just arrived with a CF reader and I'm almost ready to go. But I have a couple of quick questions.

1) Do I need to format the CF card in some way? If so, would you tell me how, please.
2) How do I copy the .avi files to the CF card? Is it just drag and drop while in the CF reader and then pop the card into the Axim?
3) Finally, I've loaded TCPMP but haven't used it yet. Is there anything special I need to know about how to watch the movies, i.e. landscape mode or specific tuning?

Thanks again for an awesome tutorial. I would've been lost without it.

You ROCK!

HELP ... I loaded my 3 files onto the CF card and put it in the Axim. When I try to play them, the audio is clear but the picture is not. :(
Any idea what's wrong? Any pointers will be GREATLY appreciated as I leave for vacation tomorrow evening.

Beach1ady,

1. I never formatted my cards
2. I take my card out of the Axim and put it into a card reader, then use windows explorer to move the file. It takes about 10 minutes to move a 2 hour movie
3. I didn't do anything special with TCPMP. I use it in both portrait and landscape. Mostly landscape.

Your problem with the picture is too vague for help. Go back through the tutorial and make sure that you followed the instructions. I can't tell you why the picture is not good without more info. To tell you the truth, I probably couldn't tell you why the picture isn't good even if you gave me more info. But if you try - I'll try. Either way, have a great vacation.

Hi Steve. Thanks for the response. I just re-looked at the tutorial and I believe I followed it correctly. Here's the summary.
Named the file - Built the chain - Did auto set for cropping region - Did auto detect and got ITVC mode - picked size of 474 - MP3 at 128 - and did the highest setting I could under 640 x 480 as I have the x51v.

Next, I dragged and dropped the file onto my new CF card and popped it into the Axim (yes, I had the Axim off when I put the card in the slot.) Filename is NationalTreasure.avi

Start - TCPMP - File - Open File - CF card - directory PPC Movies - (planned to pick the .avi file here but ...)

I hit a snag. I tried to use Explorer on my PC to remove the .avi's and re-copy them one at a time to make sure I hadn't corrupted them. Only now, TCPMP sees the folder but no .avi files. Any ideas?

I saw your other thread where someone told you to reformat your card. I think they told you the right thing. Do a search on this site about reformatting cards and start reading. That's the best way to figure it out. Sorry you're having problems, it will work out, don't worry.

Beach1ady, my search found you should reformat the card on your computer, not your pda, b/c it's faster. You should reformat it as FAT32 according to the search I did.
