Beach1ady, my search found you should reformat the card on your computer, not your pda, b/c it's faster. You should reformat it as FAT32 according to the search I did.
Thanks Steve. It looks like the darn card is hosed, which means no movies for me at the airport. (Good thing I like to read.) I can't believe that I screwed it up so fast.
I'll get back to you in a few weeks when I get back from vacation and get the CF card issue worked out. I do want the movie option to work.
Enjoy your night and once again the step by step guide was awesome. THANX.
Great tutorial, thanks for all the hard work. I was wondering though, even when I select 700mb, the best size it shows is 560 x 304. I cant even get close to 640 x 480. Has anyone else had this happen?
I hit a snag. I tried to use Explorer on my PC to remove the .avi's and re-copy them one at a time to make sure I hadn't corrupted them. Only now, TCPMP sees the folder but no .avi files. Any ideas?
This also happens to me. To see the .avi files in the folder try doing a soft reset after inserting the memory card in your axim. They always show up for me in TCPMP after doing this. Good luck!

Thanks for the idiot-proof tutorial stevenator65, by far the best I have read. Having read it I downloaded FairUse and followed your tutorial step-by-step. BRILLIANT!!!
So far I have converted a couple of my fave films, so that I always have them at hand (I mean, who leaves home WITHOUT their Ax? Not me!).
I bow to your wisdom...... I am not worthy, I am not worthy....
One point, mentioned in a reply above, if you play around with the "Cropping Region" (step 6 in the tutorial) you can alter the aspect ratio of the display. I did this with Kentucky Fried Movie and have a full screen display, with little to no loss in picture quality.
Once again Stevenator, thanks for a really excellent tutorial, I am not worthy.... I am not worthy.... I am not worthy.... I am not worthy.... I am not worthy.... I am not worthy.... (you get the drift!)
I've tried a few free programs to put DVD's on my Axim and gave up. For me it was matter of need, time and patience than figuring it out. But this was straight forward.
I encode and i try to play back winxp wmp version 9. When i used the le version i would check the movie on my computer and they played. I purchased the actual program ('cause i want to do some ipod video) and now after i encode, the movies won't play on my computer (says codec error) but will play on my ax using tcmp....any advise?
Wow! WHAT a tutorial! How much do you rock? Very. Thank you for putting this together.
I haven't received my x51v yet (should arrive in a couple of days), but I'm gearing up for it, and how. Having said that, I'm pretty new to PDAs/PocketPCs/Etc. Just got my first earlier this year (a Palm Z22) and now I've gone all serious about it.
I was wondering how large the movie files end up being on the CF card. Is a 2GB sufficient, or would a 4GB be better? (Edit: I've just read the answer to the capacity question in an earlier post--I'll be going for the 4GB) And what about these SanDisk "UltraII" cards? Are they worth the extra couple of bucks?
Also, I have a Mac laptop that I've kept set to Region 2 (as opposed to the US Region 1), so that I can watch all the DVDs I collected and burned in England. Does this process work on a Mac? Does it work on PAL as well as NTSC? Have I asked enough questions?
Anyway, glad to have found this site. I can't wait to put all of this newfound knowledge to use!

Did you ever get your question answered? I was seeing the same thing until I found the "Show only preferred resolutions" check box next to the output size selection list. When you uncheck that, all of the resolutions show up. I think the check mark comes as the default.
And thanks, Stevenator for a GREAT tutorial! Now I can take "Cars" and the 2006 World Series DVD with me everywhere!
HELP ... I loaded my 3 files onto the CF card and put it in the Axim. When I try to play them, the audio is clear but the picture is not. :(
Any idea what's wrong?
Beach1ady, from this and the other thread you talk about the problems with the CF card and hopefully a new card would straighten out the picture issue you had. If you don't have another card to try it out with yet though, you can also try playing the .avi file on your PC to see if you get the same issue with the video. If the picture is OK then your conversion with Fairuse was fine.
1. I tried this last night- followed the tutorial exactly. Took about4 hours total on my older computer (let it run overnight). I ended up with a large .AVI file and a large .MP3 file. I copied both to my CF card and tried to view with TCPMP on my Axim X5 Basic. The picture plays just fine but has no audio. I tried playing other videos that I have and they play audio and video both. Don't know what I did wrong to lose the audio on the movie.
2. I tried playing the .AVI file on Windows Media 11, just released and downloaded from MS, and it says it can't play that file.
3. How does this work with DVD's of TV show episodes? Are there several large chains, maybe one per episode, or are they all packed into one large chain?
I ran it again last night and it worked better- produced an AVI file with audio that plays nicely. I let it run overnight the first time so I can't confirm that the program completed without errors. Last night I watched it enough to know that it did complete so that could be one of the problems.
I used a resolution of 320x___, and set the other parameters per the tutorial. My AVI file was just under 400Mb.
