full screen divx encodes, list what settings you're using here
axim 300mhz
divx 5.05
100kbit video
encode every other frame
320x240 res
LAME mp3 codec
128kbit, 44khz, stereo
audio and video sync'd perfectly
0 dropped frames on a 3.5min clip with pocketMVP
post your results here.. i'll keep trying higher quality and post back the best I get without any dropped frames.
Figure I'll first up the bitrate until I get dropped frames, then I'll try lowering audio settings until I have zero dropped frames and no syncing issues.

Hey red-i - I like this idea! This is also suggested at the end of the Pocket MVP help file, with a sort of form you can use. Information like this could help those getting started and those wanting to tweak their settings.
[snip]
Video
--------
Resolution:
Bitrate:
Framerate:
Decimate by 2: Y or N
2-Pass: Y or N
Audio
--------
Khz:
Kbit:
Stereo: Y or N
Misc. Info
--------
[end snip]
I would suggest the "Misc. Info" contain TYPE of original video (DVD, captured video, brodacast TV, VHS tape, etc. and type of capture device (if applicable).
I tried something similar on one of my first examples of Axim video. It's a 3 minute - 7 mb file of Columbia's (unknown at the time) final launch.

good format.. maybe we should also add in a spot for dropped frames
someting like:
(snip)
Frame Loss
__________
total frames:
dropped frames:
(end snip)
as any high setting with 20% loss of frames is pretty much useless

red-i and I have kinda already started this in the Audio Sync thread too :) When I get back home, perhaps I can run some more encodes and post the results. My first batch were all at 128kbps video, and the newer ones are all 250kbps. I'm anxious to see what 300 looks like, if I can tell it from 250kbps or not, and what is the cost of the extra 50kbps in terms of filesize, framerate, and dropped frames.
I would also like to find time to play around with the audio to see if I can find a mono setting, or at least something less than 128kbps MP3 that will stay in sync.
Off-topic: anyone try encoding an OGM container yet? (Perhaps this should be a new thread???)

OGM
I've done a several encodes in ogm containers. I don't have the exact settings with me here but they are usually around 250, deci by 2, 240x320, with 96 average (56-360) stereo ogg vorbis sound. They run on my 400 mhz Axim with no dropped frames. 2hours is ususally around 200mg.
If you want more info, I'll look at the settings when I can.

Yes, I'd definately be interested in your settings for OGM, and also what tools you're using. If nothing else, the ability to keep DVD Chapters sounds like it would be handy.

I encoded a South Park episode (21 minutes) which ended up taking up 20mb
100khz
160x120 size(its animation who cares, lol)
mono 32khz sound
I'm going to try more with cheaper sound and see what kind of size results i can get.

can't you just install the ogg vorbis codec and use it in vdub? as for chaptering I can't see how you'd be able to do this aside from having seperate avis and some kinda index file to load up (like a playlist or something?)

From the little I've read, Ogg Vorbis is not compatible with .avi as-is, which is where the OGM container comes in. It appears to be a special format of .avi (or some other video format) that is able to have OGG audio muxed into it, and it supports multiple audio tracks as well (you can put dialog + director's commentary + whatever all in one file and choose which track you want to play, just like a DVD).
Chapters seem to work simply by ripping each chapter individually then wrapping everything into the OGM container.
I guess a fair analogy would be that ogm is similar to .zip where the zip archive contains multiple file types, and some applications can read/execure files directly from the archive.
