I'd go with avi and use TCPMP to play it with on your ppc. Check out my tutorial on how to convert movies for your ppc. It's in "my pda" and it's called Fairuse Tutorial.

I personally use WMV, but AVI is great too. WMV takes a while to encode though.

I have tried many types and go with DIVX and TCPMP player. THe size is 'usually' smaller and IMHO the quality is better (especially for action movies). I have watched Star Wars and Matrix on my Aximx51v with great success. I am still playing with getting the subtitles done the way I want them -- but that is another story.
