Goodfellas

Ripping my first feature film right now. Sure does take a long time. Using VirtualDub and after 2.5 hours, I'm only half way though Job 1. It looks like it's gonna have to run through the night.

I sure hope i did not mess up any of the settings :rolling:

Thanks for the guide fibrizp ;)

Just for reference~

I'm using a P4 1.9 and it takes about 2h 15m to encode a 90 minute dvd movie in Divx 2 pass mode. A tip to shorten the encode time is to choose no audio on your first pass and then convert your audio on the second pass. :D

Maybe it's just my bad luck :rolling: but every time I only process audio on the final job, VirtualDub livelocks on me (ie. freezes up).

Goodfellas came out pretty good.
The picture is kinda dark and the volume is a little low.
How do I compensate for this in VirtualDub?
Shrek or Toy Story is next.

Thx for the tip LFNNS. I'll try it next time.

Volume can be tweaked in the Audio settings menu.

Using the Brightness/Contrast filter can help with the darkness.

I tried that and I ended up with no audio at all

I was able to succesfully use the brightness/contrast filter though.

Do you guys recommend reformatting a wide screen film to fill the whole 320 X 240? For example the source avi file I am re-encoding is 512 X 272. Following the instructions posted in the sticky, I enter 320 X 177. I think that if I try to fill the whole screen, it'll distort the picture too much. Any tips or tricks that I mmissed?

TIA

i prefer to view the vid with the normal orientation of the screen...its smaller, but its easier to watch cause both eyes see the same brightness/contrast level....

Hi Nomar,

I would try to keep the same aspect ratio and not worry about filling up the full 320x240 screen. It would be easy to see what it would look like in Vdub (you can preview the video) but I think the distortion would be too much.

Don't know why the audio didn't work for you? In the first pass I choose - full processing, no audio and in the second pass - full processing, wav audio, compression for MP3

Maybe you forgot to change the second pass settings :D

LFNNS:

In the first pass I choose - full processing, no audio and in the second pass - full processing, source audio, MPEG Layer-3 compression for MP3.

You choose wav audio??? Where do you get the external wav file from?

Probably just bad luck on my part, but so far every single time I only process audio on Job 2, VDub livelocks on me. :(

As for aspect ratio, I use the cropping tool to maintain the correct aspect ratio (regardless of landscape or portrait view) of the source video.
