I'd just like to announce that orb is an awesome site and program. for those of you that have windows media center, orb is program that allows remote access to all your media file (photos, music, Tv, etc) from any internet connected device. including my axim. it's pretty cool.

i encourage all to check it out. by the way, it's free.

Why is it free ? What do they get out of it other than being a nice guy for sharing ? Are they using your files and data for themselves also ? Just curios as to how they can do this for free all the time or are they gonna start charging once they get enough people to use it ? There is another site called "putfile.com" that lets you upload your files and view other peoples stuff but I cant see how they operate for free unless they are getting something out of it.

 

I used to use it (or attempt to use it), and really didn't like it. very slow site to navigate on a pda (lots of memory) and it took wayy too long to finally download the file (.apx I think it was?) and be able to play it...

is it free since they have partner... Why is google search or gmail free?

They have partnering agreements with some companies. Anyway, Orb USED to be a pay service, THEN they decided to make it free. They have continually said that Orb will remain free.

If you have questions, just go over to Orb's site and read the forums. The mods and developers of Orb are always willing to answer questions concerning security, and why Orb is free.

I have been using Orb for quite some time, and am very pleased. The developers are always willing to help (provided you do as you should first, like read the FAQs, search forum posts, etc.)

google and gmail and such are free because they have advertisers which pay them because the advertisements get more people to buy their products

 

OK I just took the bait. Downloaded the ORB software and created an account. I have to say that I am impressed. VERY impressed. Location-free TV on my Axim (who knew?)

but you have to wonder - how can this service possibly remain free???
