Smaller mp3's

Good morning,

I have a DVD with about 4.5 GB of mp3 music. I would like to put it all on my x51v... How can I change these files to a smaller size??

When I use my CD's, I change the bit rate to a smaller size and I'm happy with the quality!! But, cannot figure out how to do it from mp3's on a DVD!!

Thank you,
Paul

MusicMatch has the ability to convert MP3 from one bitrate to another. It can convert them right off of the DVD, but the output files with have to be written to your HD. It also take some time to get through 4.5 GB.

4 gigs is a lot.you will need to get a nice cf card even if the songs are compressed. and the thing is thaat if you compress a song it tends to sound horible.

Yes, MusicMatch Jukebox is free. Don't confuse that with Jukebox Plus which you have to purchase (not that the service is not worth it.) The feature you want is in the free version. You can find the download here.

Don't compress them at all - buy a 4G SD card. You can get them for about $100.

... or go to www.sourceforge.net and look for audio transcoding software. There are a bunch of them, so it will take some work. When you transcode your MP3's, they will suffer some loss of quality, so it is best to rip directly from CD. To better compress, use a variable bit rate MP3 or rip to OGG Vorbis format (vbr implied). Many agree that you can get listenable audio at lower bitrates with OGG than you can with MP3. You will need another media player, such as TCPMP (http://tcpmp.corecodec.org), to listen to OGG.
I rip directly to OGG using CDDA Rip XP (found at sourceforge). It can handle transcoding as well.

I have a few CDs ripped at 196kbps, and these sound very good (to my untrained and not very discerning ear). I would venture that I can reduce that even more. It is on my list of things to do, mostly I am just copying mp3s I ripped to my pc on to my Axim. So I can't get too much there. I'd like to find something that can reduce mp3s in whole groups of folders.

Lately I have been using WMP on my PC to downconvert my music to my PDA. You can adjust the bitrate simply through the devices tab. I store all of my music as MP3s on my PC at 320kbs. I then drag and drop all of the music I want on my PDA to the sync panel in WMP. I have it set to downconvert to 160kbs. When I hit sync it takes about 5 seconds per song and then less than 1 second per song to transfer it to my CF/SD card. The output of WMP is WMA format, but this is not an issue since it does not add any DRM (to my knowledge). The songs sound great and the sync process works very well.

Yea, I'd agree to go with OGG or WMA. Both have better quality sound than MP3 at lower bitrates. That way you can get smaller file sizes without compromising quality.
