mp3 to ogg question
i've been reading quite a few posts about converting mp3 files to ogg to save space..my question is, how much do i lose in quality? i know very little about the different types of audio format and am looking to transfer tons of music onto my new 4 gb sd card. what would you all recommend?

if ogg is the way to go, what program do i use to convert?

thanks,

dbPowerAMP is a nice program for converting. Quality of compressed audio is dependant on bit rate as well as codec. So basically it's pretty subjective. I use 192kbs for mp3 and 160kbs for ogg, I think those bit rates are similar in quality. Anything lower than that sounds bad to me, it depends how sensitive your ears are (to quality) so you might be happy with lower bit rates. You'll save some space with ogg but not much.

Also, convert straight from the cd to ogg if you can. It will sound better.

I also use the above mentioned dbPowerAMP. Does a good job.

I don't notice much quality loss. I usually set settings so that .ogg files are somewhere between 0.5 and 0.75 of the original .mp3 size.
