Question Does 400mhz play video better than 300mhz Axim?

I just picked up the 300mhz Axim this week. I tried to watch some WMV encoded with Windows Movie Maker at the "high" settings:
320x240
30fps
256kbs

These video's don't play smoothly and drop frames to the point of almost making the video unplayable.

Video's encoded with the "pda profile" play allright but they don't play full screen.

I was wondering if I need to exchange my 300mhz for the 400mhz model.

Any feedback from those out there who have used both?

Will the 100mhz difference let me watch 320x240 30fps 256 without dropped frames?

I have the 300, and videos encoded using Windows Movie Maker NEVER worked very good for me, even if I was overclocked to 400 Mhz. Really, the problems lies in the WMV encoding. It just isn't that good. I gave fabrizo's guide a go, and it works great on the 300 without any overclocking necessary. Really you won't notice a difference because of the extra 100 Mhz between the two. The main difference will be in the extra RAM and ROM. But for movies, the 300 should be fine if encoded properly. Good luck!

See that is kind of what I thought. I figured the 300mhz model would do me fine even for running game emulators and stuff. Processors don't scale 100% so a 100mhz difference isn't 1/4 faster.

However, I get stuttering sounds in my NES emulator, and then the dropped frame thing.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to re-encode all my files (460gigs).

What emulator are you using? I have trid out a few of them, and none really worked very well except PocketNester. It is fantastic compared to all the others I have tired. I haven't had any problems with it. Man, that would suck pretty bad to have to re-encode 460 gigs! Just start out slowly, and only convert the videos you REALLY want to have, then do a couple a day, and in 5 years or so you will have all the videos done!

There's a tutorial on this site (I think its under multimedia) on how to encode videos for your Axim. I haven't tried it yet...but I bet it will make things much more playable, if you're willing to try it. I'll give it a go shortly, having just purchased a desktop yesterday...

Well part of the problem is that the tutorials have you hand manage every step of the conversion. Is there any way to batch convert the files???

I have heard of a program called Dr. Divx that is a one click conversion process, but I haven't used it, so I don't know how easy it is. I have read that it is pretty good though. I think it does cost money, $50 after the free trial if I remember correctly.

The 'hand managing' part is only a 'problem' the first time (possibly 2) that you do it, after that, you can set up a Job list in VirtualDub in less than a minute and just let it do its thing. Not totally automated, but it's pretty quick and easy, and gets you the exact settings you want in the process.
