Okay, so I finally, after 3 months, really sat down and played around witht he MP3 capabilites of my Axim x30. I found that if I use Mortsave to turn off my screen while it is playing MP3's then I only use about 36% of my battery in an almost 2 hour time span! Time to ditch the CD/MP3 player! If anyone has any better software tips for shutting the screen off other than using Mortsave, please let me know :)

Mortplayer has this feature built into it. I think several other commercial players do as well. IMHO, Mortplayer is the most full-featured freeware player.
Give it a shot - I use my Axim 50. I still use WMP player and have assigned screen togle to one of the buttons.
Battery usage with screen off is really small. At the end of the day - I'm still left with more than 70% of battery (I use extened version). That's more than 3 hours of listening to music. That does not take into account other usage - like checking maps, news, playing an occasional game or two etc.
TCPMP also has it built in, along with windows media player...

I've checked my copy of TCPMP and can not find the screen toggle anywhere. I downloaded mortplayer and like it okay...My only prob with Mortplayer is that if I have the equalizer enabled, all my songs have a lot of static to them...I'm going to try the screen toggle with WMP and see how that goes...When I was using mort player, my battery life also went down faster than when I used WMP and mort saver. SO i'll try the screen toggle and see how big of a diff that makes :) Thanks everyone!

I use Mortplayer with the today screen plugin and have assigned one of my keys to toggle the screen. On days when I'm working alone (I work in a room with no windows and limited access) I rock out.

In TCPMP you have to map a button for that feature... it's in the options settings

I never could find the toggle feature in TCPMP. But I like the screen toggle that was suggested earlier and using WMP9. So far I really like this set up. Thanks everyone for your input!

I was just curious who else uses either the Mortplayer or WMP9 setup with screen toggle and how much battery it uses, when you use the regular battery that came withe the Axim. With the WMP9 and the built in screen toggle feature, if I start listening to music at 99% battery, by the time I make it work, 2Hrs later oon the bus, It drops to about 64%. I have not monitored Mortplayer like this yet, but I'm going to try it soon. It really doesn't matter to me either way because I charge my Axim while I'm work and home...but just curious as to what other have found...

When you are just listening to mp3s with screen off you should also set your processor speed to its lowest value because it doesnt take much processing power to play a mp3 also the lower the bitrate of the mp3s the longer the battery last. My x5 can play 128 bitrate mp3s with screen off for over ten hours on standard battery.
