What do you use to organize your mp3s?

I listen to music quite a bit on my axim. I've got a fairly large collection of music on my desktop in mp3 format (approx. 11,000 songs) covering various genres. I tried using iTunes to organize my collection and to assist me in in making up playlists to transfer to a memory card to play in my axim. iTunes insists that I import the music which it will convert to the proprietary ACC format. Is there any other software that will help me to organize mp3s so I can more easily make up my playlists? Thanks for any suggestions.

1 - iTunes works perfectly well with MP3.
2 - AAC is not an Apple proprietary format.

iTunes will do what you want, but you could also consider Winamp.

Are there any good tutorials for using iTunes for a non iPod user?

The biggest challenge you're going to have is getting the MP3s onto the Axim. And iTunes is gonna suck for that, since it IS built around the iPod when you're talking about external devices.

What I would do though is just dmp say 15 songs into iTunes and see if it will let you drag and drop out of a playlist onto the Axim.

I haven't seen any iTunes/Axim tutorials.

I'd recommend the new Windows Media Player 11 beta... it does a fantastic job of library organization (IMHO).... you can do smart playlists.. and it can export to all kinds of devices.. SD cards, CF cards, Axims, etc.

Media Player 11 was a huge step up. I now prefer it over iTunes for library management.

It's not free but I like J River Media Center. It's great especially if you are a "music collector" and you like to keep a lot of data about your music like covers, reviews, bios, lyrics, etc. It does handheld syncing, although I have not used that part of it much myself.

I use Winamp on the desktop for my 20,000+ tracks. I then plug the Axim 8Gb card straight into the PC and 'send' whichever MP3s I select from Winamp. Winamp has also got a pretty good track info editor.

Then use Pocket Player on the Axim, mainly because I like the way you don't need to specify playlists to play and Pocket Player's browse function is very much like Winamp. In this way I can select whatever genre's, artists or whatever I feel like at the time, quickly export to the card. Obviously though Pocket Player is not free.

I'm trying Windows Media Player 11. It's in beta but it works nicely in syncing my playlists to a memory card. I'll give Winamp a go as well. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll be uninstalling iTunes in a minute or two.

I use use Winamp Pro for audio and WMP11 for video.
Overall, Winamp is far more superior than any other music player I've used.

Having all the required codec jammed into one player is what important for me.
On desktop it's Winamp&WMP11/10 and on PPC it's TCPMP.

iTune is junk for kiddies to play with.:exc:

I don't listen to songs on my Axim, but at least on MacOS, you can drag/drop between any mounted volume and iTunes -- with the default settings, dragging into iTunes imports the songs to the library (and into a playlist if you drag it into one) and dragging out copies to the destination location. I use thius to send songs between my iBook and iMac all the time.

So, if you mount the Axim and open up the the folder you want, I would think you could highlight the songs, drag them from iTunes to the start bar button for the folder window, and then drop them in when the wiindow pops to the front.

I use WMP10's sync feature through AS. Not the best in the world but gets the job done.
