ive got the axim 51, and i use it to play music in my car. i have tcmp and i dont like it at all, what are some really good music players for the axim, ones with bass boost and what not would be great. thanks!
The best one i've found is MortPlayer - totally free, and has ALL the features you need!
My favourite is you can assign a button to turn off the screen, while still playing music. You can listed for HOURS on the standard battery if you do that.
I also use GPS, and mortplayer plays fine in the background, and never skips.
It also has various default bass/treble/etc settings, or you can custom tweak it to your liking.

My vote is mortplayer, but i mostly listen at the gym. I've use it in the car using a combination of it's native controls and my car audio system. It works great, and the big buttons of the mypod skin are great.
I know that some also like gsplayer. There are commercial players as well, but I don't have any experience with them.
This is kinda of one of those "Which is better?" arguments that has been around for years...Pepsi or Coke, XM or Sirius, Vi or EMacs, Linux or Windows or OSX, PC or Apple....I could go on for-evah with different combos.
Personally, I use GSPlayer for mp3's and Shoutcast streams, WMP for other audio files (wav) and other streaming audio, and TCPMP for video. Does it work for me? Yup. Will it work for you? Dunno. Try it and see.
ottomatic, what do you dislike about tcmp, if its the prob of not having bass boost there is an EQ. As I remember it's kind of hidden away but its in the option menu I think, I don't have my ax on me.

GSPlayer: Fast, lightweight, simple, all necessary functions. Free.
MortPlayer: The swiss pocket knife (though from Germany ;)). Has lots of functions and settings, and very flexible skinning, but sometimes it takes a bit to find the right tool... A useful stand-alone features are favorites and Changer Mode, which allows to switch through playlists and directory contents easyly and automatically (at end of current playlist or shuffle through all favorite contents, in Changer Mode). Free.
PocketPlayer: Not as complex as MortPlayer, but has most required features. Special features are cross-fading or gapless play and a visualizer, and it supports e.g. Audible and WMP format. Shareware.
PocketMusic: Something between GSPlayer and PocketPlayer. Easy to use esp. since the interface is close to WinAmp, not quite as complex as PocketPlayer. Free for basic version, Shareware for some additional formats (like Ogg Vorbis) and some additional features like WinAmp skin support.
TCPMP: Plays almost everything, but the interface is a bit awkward for music. Controls are only available by device buttons or menu entries, no touchscreen buttons (no idea if this changes with 1.0).
The sound quality seems to depend from the source file type (format, encoder, bitrate, ...), music style, and personal preferences. I've read "x sounds much better than y" in almost every combination so far... (Even "MortPlayer sounds better than GSPlayer" and vice versa, though they share the same source for playback routines...)
Simply check it out for your files and taste...
wmp is the pits imho. gsplayer locked up my axim when i shut down with it running. mortplayer was less than intuitive for me to load individual folders from cf card (i do not need to create playlists). tcpmp does it all for me (audio and video) for all formats and appearance does not really matter since i usually have the screen off and the axim in my pocket. x50mix does a good job of adjusting sound to my liking when listening through headphones (wired, not bt). i like function over eye candy.
