Honestly i don't know if their is a video encoder that is designed to run on a pocketpc. But even if one existed I wouldn't want it on my device. The reasons being; encoding is both memory and processor intensive. If you have ever tried video conversions on a desktop pc you'll quickly notice how it slows everything down. And I doubt a ppc even has enough ram; netfront running a moderately sized page can easily consume 10 megs and pocket artist uses even more sometimes.

And then there's battery life. So it may not be impossible but it's impractical!

hmmmm I don't know of an app off hand, but I'd say such an app could be useful for smaller files. I'd compare it to unzipping files on one. Very handy for stuff that's lightweight for sure!

well i wouldn't want the app for everyday use... but i can see where it would be useful now and again.

So if anyone manages to find an app that does this, i'd be interested

Have you found anything?

If not and you manage to find a command line open sourced version of such encoder, I might be able to port it to WM.

There are some online converters. Thats probably the only solution now for PPCs.

It would be quite hard to port this, since it is strongly dependent on the mingw system. Besides that, this is a huge project with very ambitious goals.

Any other ideas?

Somebody needs to make a streaming flv plugin for tcpmp/coreplayer, so we can watch flvs directly on the ppc and stream them without needing to download.

spunker: To do that, FIRST they need to have something to either let us use Flash 9 on PPC's, or else something that can translate Flash 9 video into something else on the fly... which will take a lot of CPU power.

Betcha it'll be WM6 or WM7 before we see that.

Flv seems to play easily on a pc, and it doesnt need to buffer as much as other video. Most pcs have a harder time playing a movie ripped to mpeg.

I do notice that flv/swf take a lot more video card power. If i am able to play youtube/google video on an old pc with 333mhz proc and 4mb vid card, than you think at least the vga "v" series axims could play it also with 16mb graphics.
