creating movies for Dell Axim X51v

I am using Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum 4 to rip my dvd collection so I can watch videos on my Axim. There is a format option of Dell Axim X51v so that is what I use. The quality and sound is fantastic but the size for a 2 hour movie is around 800mb!! Does anyone else use this program and know of a better way to get excellent quality but a lot lower file size? Thanks

Cant play xvids, mpegs etc on my x51v!! :-(

Hiya all

I've been trawling the net for any help relating to this problem.

I'm having problems with trying to play some movies or in fact ANY movies on my Dell x51v, using WM5.

Tried using Media Player and the Smartmovie Player 3.22

Media player comes up with
Quote:
an object or name was not found
(when trying a small 50mb avi movie!)
or
Quote:
not enough storage is available to complete this operation
(when trying a 170mb avi movie!)

So I tried Smartmovie Player 3.22 and that comes up with
Quote:
no codec for video format: "xvid"
Installed the xvid, CoreMp4 codecs etc (and re-installed) for Smartmovie player

Weird. Haven't been able to play any vids whatsoever, except wmv vids through media player.

Storage Memory before loading any player is 172.14 mb
Program Memory before loading any player is 27.13 mb

SD Card has 602 mb free (where the vids are kept!)

Its a new PDA and my first! (shows eh!)

Im very familiar with PCs, WinXP etc but things are alot different on a PPC!...or so it seems.

Any advice/info would be appreciated

Maybe try a smaller bitrate when converting!.
I just tried some Xvids (Underworld Evolution from a website loaded with 150mb-200mb xvids/avi's for PDA's) for my x51v and they were approx 160+ mb -ish and although very pixelated on a PC, looked alot better on the axim VGA screen. I must say I would prefer a much better quality so I will look into doing a 400-500mb conversion and see what that is like.

Try the PC 'Tmpgenc Plus' which is at v3+ (i think).
You can alter bitrate and may other options etc (number of passes etc).
Maybe give that a go!!.....Just a thought

It would be handy to see a side by side comparison of various encoders/converters, etc using the same movie and same target filesize and comparing results.

I have a 2gb SD Card in my x51v at the moment and even at 500 mb, that would be approx 4 full movies (or 8 for 4gb). Thats alot of entertainment 'on the go'!!
Prob need a spare backup high cap battery or car charger.

Try setting it for 320X240 screen size instead of 640X480. It will look just as good on an X50/ X51. This will bring your file size down.
