I would let betaboy reply. What he said is coreplayer 1.0 will not disable itself. He didn't say it wouldn't cripple itself.
That may be nitpicking, but I live in a world where the devil is in the details.
I'll wait to hear from betaboy again.
Exactly, reverting to the free version is not disabling itself. I too work in a world of contracts and lawyers!

I don't mind paying for a good product. I don't even mind it being tied to a particular device -- I work around a lot of software that is single computer bound. however, when I do buy something, whether it's software, hardware, or a slice of pizza, once I buy it, I'd rather it be mine and not have to worry about whether down the road it'll still be usable.
to this end, betaboy, is there a point in your software's roadmap where you anticipate your software going to the phone-home senario you foresee? another issue I've been wondering (and others as well) about is when subsequent versions are released, will we be paying for those as well (eg: 1.4/1.5/2.0/etc). if we are required to pay for new versions, this is going to get very expensive very fast as you've already mentioned you anticipate at least 2 hefty updates to the software before january rolls around (unless subsequent releases are as belated as coreplayer 1.0 has been).
anyway, these are just my primary concerns with what seems to be a more than decent software release. thanks for your time.
Ya its posted on coreplayer.com. Bugfix version coming this Tuesday.
Wasn't there when I went to bed at 1AM. ;) But I do like the fact they've polished the site up a bit... although I wish they'd set up the Coreaccount login in the same way they've done the rest of the page, for UI consistency's sake.
Edit: I just went there, don't see it. Where was it posted?
Edit #2: Now I see it. Must have had an old version of the page cached.
One should be punished if he is proven to have done something wrong. Never otherwise. This is justice by very definition.
Guilty until proven innocent is not a good philosophy, in my opinion. To cripple the player of an innocent paying customer for no reason other than not phoning home doesn't follow the definition of justice. And as you can see, it's already making a large portion of your customers wary, which isn't a benefit to you or your hard-working crew. Instead, if the player has explicitly detected criminality, it can punish the user by reverting. This follows the definition of justice.
So I beg you to reconsider when the time comes. Thank you.

From what I recall, they've taken out the phone-home thing, and are looking at having it 'check in' more for updates than for 'am I legit'. Betaboy indicated "we read the feedback on our forums" earlier in that thread. We'll see how it goes later on, but as far as I know, the 'phone back or get disabled' function' isn't going to work the way it's been stated to work in the past, and it's definitely not in 1.0 or in 1.1-1.2.

Well I took the chance and purchased. I have been a heavy user of TCPMP and my main use is for the AVC H.234 codecs from Nero, in fact this is the only thing I use TCPMP / CP for. For music I use Pocket PLayer. The new codecs in Core are much smoother thn before and it could almost play a 'full' file at Cinema size and 2Mbps (about a 2GB file!).
However, should this phone home / disabling come about with any 1.x version of Coreplayer, and revert to free player, the player will be useless to me! I am sure that Betaboy is listening to our feedback and wouldn't allow such a critical mistake to be made. If it were to happen I'm sure the communities would never forgive :realmad:
So I've paid my dues and here's hoping my trust is warranted :approve:

I'd also suggest posting on the CoreCodec forums, and maybe mailing it in as a suggestion, due to the need to travel, etc.

I have posted the same on the Corecodec forum. A few others have made a similar point. The problem would be with a phone home on a 3 day timeframe and then reverting to free player. This, as I understand it, could then disable the AVC codecs I need
