CorePlayer phones home
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...?threadid=8103
"So, not only do they lock CorePlayer to a single device (something that is not mentioned on the purchase page), but also will they temporarily deactivate your purchased copy should you not keep "in touch" with their server (something else that is not mentioned on the purchase page)."
Why should switch from TCPMP if they do something like this? :realmad:

Wow I read thru that thread and that doesn't sound nice! I don't like "big brother" features. I am curious what the answer to this will end up and be. Thank you for posting it. I haven't purchased yet and maybe I won't in the end.

If that is (and remains the case) then I'll either stay put, or go for the free version (and throw a few bucks in their direction as a show of appreciation for Betaplayer/tcpmp)

Of course I'd prefer per-user licensing, but per-machine is a legitimate way of doing it.
and you can move from 1 machine to another...

I'm not bothered by the per machine end. But from the forum discussion the link sends you to I was bothered by the phone home end. And I also saw it mentioned on both the review and the site itself. You have to check in periodically with the company or it reverts to the free version which has less features. What's up with that? I've never heard of such a thing. That is what has me bothered.

hehe... I love how ppl over exagerate things...
Here let me say this right off the bat...
COREPLAYER 1.0 DOES NOT PHONE HOME
COREPLAYER 1.0 DOES NOT DISABLE ITSELF
All thanx for the posts... and I want to clarify what are REALLY doing rather the having others state what they 'think' we are doing. But first I need to be define what our goals and objectives are first...
We have are creating much more then a media player... When I left DivX I had designed not only their website but their Community as well... and as catchy as it seems the social aspect of it is playing a larger goal of what CorePlayer is all about.
This directly relates to not only the player frontend but how we manage the backend accounts. With that being said... in later versions what we are doing it rolling out other services that tie directly into the player, your device and your account.
Some of which are
CoreSYNC - Is at the backbone of several of our core technology offerings that will allow you to sync metadata (or other things via out open API) to other 'linked' core account users.
This is also in line with other features we are adding like Seek and Share, which allows you to not only search for other CorePlayer users in a local LAN but WAN users you have either give permission to you or you to them.
CoreTunes - Is our integrate desktop media manager. It allows you to sync you metadata to your core account, web services, 'linked' core players.
So we have an obligation to provide a secure network for not only the services but the permissions within that service. But after all we belive in empowering our community, so after all of that.... if you do not want to use the 'other' aspect of the player and just want a GREAT multimedia experience then great...we give you the ability to do what you want and how you want to do it.

I also want to go into more details on intent... and what others are talking about.. and why we will later link to hardware.
In the world on mobile multimedia there are hundreds of combinations of hardware chipsets within the devices... from the beginning TCPMP was written in such a manner that it allows an almost infinite number of devices to be supported... and now under CorePlayer the same can be true but even to a further extent in that providing a means to the community to get a real time update for a specific issue and then notifying the effected users via our CoreAccout system is un-equaled.
A perfect example is the current issue with HTC/ATI chipset... if we know you have the device in our account... we can simply post the fix to our SVN and have a it notify those users of an update available to download and compile on the fly for the user and all the have to do is 'self serve' via their account.

So Betaboy you are saying that if the software is purchased there is never a need to "phone home", but if you want updates that is how you would recieve them? I am really anxious to try this out but I am bothered by inconsitancies I see popping up. The price is the main one it is not 19.99 as we were told. Seems to me you should have waited to unveil until you had the "backbone" already in place but I am a newbie so what do I know. But if I understand correctly there is no need ever to "phone home" unless you want an update (which I assume is free since we have paid for the product). That this social community will somehow benifit us as users should we want "more than a media player". It sounds like a P2P (is that the right way to write it? Peer sharing). Is that what Coreplayer is attempting? I will probably buy the product to try it out but I still think the dust needs to settle a bit.

lostjak... we had to to the $24.95 for Handango and Mobiread because of 'their' discount coupons... when we roll out our inhouse e-commerce end later this week we can offer our own discount @ $19.95 on CorePlayer.com ... but at least for now its out there.

I was really looking forward to this coming out as I absolutly love tcmp.
To make this really clear.... I tend to be awa from home for about 4 weeks at a time with no access to the internet - unless the hotels provide free access. I load on about 6 DVD ripped in Nero AVC whilst away to watch and so Corplayer won't get a chance to access the internet.
Simple question... will Coreplayer work without reverting to a 'trial' or restricted version during this time or longer without any access to internet? If not then this is a deal killer.
I saw Betaboy's reply earlier but just want to confirm.
Thanks.

He bold markigs make clear it WON'T revert to a limited version so yes it will keep working.
But you won't be able to get the bug fixes and update till you connect (logical IMHO)

I would let betaboy reply. What he said is coreplayer 1.0 will not disable itself. He didn't say it wouldn't cripple itself.
That may be nitpicking, but I live in a world where the devil is in the details.
I'll wait to hear from betaboy again.

IIRC, they're deploying CorePlayer Free, which is what CorePlayer will revert to if it doesn't get a chance to get a new 'token' from the server every now and then, once they get the Social Networking stuff deployed. That is missing the paid version codecs, from what I recall.

The question is how are the paid codecs and the future social networking networking feature related with each other to disable one if you don't intend to use the other?
