good DVD encoder for commercial DVDs

Guys,

I went out (actually, I stayed in) and bought CorePlayer went it was commercially released last week. I've been following the team's progress as they've released v1.02 and the Palm version today.

I've never been much of one to watch videos on my PDA, but now having a good video player on it, I became interested.

I saw Stevenator65's review of FairUse and thought "Ok, let's try and put one of my videos on the Axim." I find a short video that I like, put the DVD in the drive, point FairUse to it, and tell it to go.

Then I get my problem - I didn't realize that commercial DVDs are copy-protected! FairUse won't do the encoding, and I don't want to put potentially illegal software on my computer to try and get it to do it.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thus - what I'm looking for is a good encoder that will let me encode my commercial videos. Something like PocketDVD Wizard will let me do it, but it doesn't really give me lots of options (like video and audio codecs to use and bit rates)...

So, does a video encoder exist out there that will encode my purchased DVDs and give me a decent range of encoding options?

P

first go to http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/ and dowload DVDDecrypter. then use it to put the dvd vobs on your hard drive. then download super from here and convert the vobs to any format you want!

Maybe I'm missing something here but I use Fairuse to make AVI files of my commerical dvds. Ones I own but that I want to view when I am away from home. I have not had a problem yet except when I tried Xfiles season 1 disc 1... I only got the first episode & no one has explained why yet.

Interesting - Super looks really good.

Another question: when the DVD is composed of multiple vobs (7 total), and not all of them are in the same language, how am I supposed to know which ones to use and which ones not to? (I encoded the first two and the last two of the seven, only to find that the first two were in English and the last two were in French!)

The other complication that I could see comes from the pause in playback you'd see as the PPC player switched from one file to another...

I found this thread talking about it. Almost all that I saw was good.

Wierd. I was initially trying with the second DVD in the Incredible's movie (the one that has the short named "Jack Jack Attack") - and FairUse wouldn't take it.

After reading your post, I stuck in another DVD - "Return of the Jedi" - and it's working fine. Eating all my CPU cycles, but working fine :) .

Wierd.

I tried Lion King & it didn't work either. But I did the Star Wars movies & they all worked fine. So far the only dvd I couldn't make an avi of for my pda is Lion King. But I have heard Disney has some pretty tough copy protection. I watch a lot of movies so I have lots. I think it is pretty slick so don't give up on it too easily!! Especially since I didn't understand how this all works... the tutorial sits next to my desk!

DVD Shrink is free and supposed to be good -I use FairUse and I found that when you want to encode a multi-episode series it has to be done one at a time as like lostjak I only got the first episode.

Humm the episode thing is confusing me! I tried xfiles and it only got the first episode. I see Alastair you are from the UK... I also did Hetty Wainthrope R2 and I got all the episodes and I did monk season 4 & got all the episodes. The only one I have ever gotten just one episode is the xfiles. But I aways run them all the way thru like a regular dvd to get the whole thing. I LOVE series esp old tv so I that is what I mainly make avi's of. That's why xfiles threw me for a loop!
