FM Transmitters...

There are few radio stations in my area, so i want to get a fm transmitter to use on my axim or pc to "broadcast" a radio station, so i can listen to it in my house. I may also use it for mp3s in the car, etc.

I see many fm tranmitters have a short range. Is this b/c ffc regulations or something. What is good range (ft) for one of these.

How do they work? Good bad... what brands...

I have the Belkin one and it works as good as a FM transmitter can work in my area (NY,NY) where there is a broadcast signal on almost every frequency, but then I only use it in my car so I never actually tested the range. The Belkin also lets you manually choose your station, not like some others that only have 4 presets that you can't change. Check MY PDA for a link to the site.

I use an iriver. It's one of the most powerful fm transmitters out there. It's digital; allows the full fm range; and has 3 programable preset buttons. I only have interference when in a densely populated urban area. It's fine in suburbia.

This is what it looks like http://www.ncix.com/products/_produc....php?sku=16100

They are only designed for use in cars and though I have not seen the specification I would only expect them to have a range of no more than 3 or 4 metres. Any more power than that and you would cause problems with any car beside you on a similar frequency. Generally they are powered from the cigarette lighter so unless you had one which used a couple of AA's you would need a 12V power source to use it in the house.

Ive seen ones that run on batterys and car charger, and i could always swap a ac adapter for the car charger.

I live in a rural area, that is one of the reasons i want one of these. Theres nothing on the radio, and around my house i can stream radio for free, or mp3s in the car.

Too cheap to get sat radio.

The Belkin I mentioned can use batteries or the 12v car charger that comes with it.
