Exclamation Virtual Dub FORMULAS!

Hey Guys,

For everyone out there who has this mpeg to avi conversion
down to a science.....please share your resizing equations.

EXAMPLE

352x240 would probably be 320x224

Thanks!

Ray

its fairly simple actually

for example, i usually resize my vids so that they play with the axe in its normal orientation, so any vids i resize are allways 240 wide.

so, if i wanted to resize your vid of 352x240 to be 240 wide the calc would be as follows.

desired width / orginal width = 240 / 352 = .6818181818

next, to find the new height to go with the 240 width we multiply the orginal width by the number we just obtained..

240 x .6818181818 = 163.63636364

divx 5.05 requires that the height be a multiple of 2 and the width be a multiple of 4, so all we have to do now is round the new height up to 164 and were all done.

the new video size is 240 x 164

same appilys to any other size you might want....

for best results keep your resolution in multiples of 8.

320x224 works well for NTSC stuff that 352x240

320x240 works well for PAL stuff that is 352x288

*note SVCD uses embedded aspect ratio information. the resolution on a SVCD can be decieving since the ACTUAL resolution is distorted from the DISPLAY resolution. use the same sizes for re-encoding SVCD's also.

BTW
the multiple of 8 'rule' is a good idea to practice for everything. resolution and bitrates should all be multiples of 8 for best results.

Thanks Guys,

I was just hoping that you could all post conversion
sizes that worked BEST for you. I'm familiar with the math end of it, maybe we could set up some type of size guideline...plain and simple

Math? Pfft... I just use the 3rd party Smart Resizer filter for VirtualDub and let it do all the math for me.

At the VirtualDub 3rd Party Filter website.

Specifically, you're looking for Smart Resizer 1.1 filter.

Here's a screenshot of the settings you need for a landscape-view video (also requiring a Rotate filter, obviously). For profile view, use a width of 240 if you want the full screen, no skin/controls. Or 236x160 to keep the skin/controls visible.

The filter shows the original (input) height and width, and when you enable the size calculator, the new height/width is displayed at the top in the disabled editboxes labeled 'new height/width'.

352x240 - of course you want to know about what to use to convert a VCD. well the simple answer is 320x224 most of the time. there is an exception though, for analog television captures the image is actually distorted by going to 352 width when the signal is actually 320. for television captures more often than not the correct size is 320x240.

640x480 - ok so you want to know how to handle high quality Divx files. well the aspect ratio is 'true' with DivX files so in this case you would want 320x240. a bonus in this instance is that there is a stock filter in VirtualDub that does a 'high quality' 2 to 1 reduction that seems to be a bit cleaner than the resize filter.

320x240 - thats the same size as your axim screen and does not need any resizing.

*for ALL OF THE ABOVE SIZES it is probably a good idea to rotate the image 90 degrees during the encoding just to save the axim the precious processor cycles that it would take to rotate the image during playback.
