The Psp has issues with the low latency of the screen refresh causing color smear issues I never could use it for Video. I've Purchased a Cowon A2 and the Screen on it is steller for movie watching I completely recommend it if you want to watch movies. The Device also reads Text files so you can Ebbok read on it, Play music and Movies. And record from TV and other sources. Nice Device
Oh well.. My 640m laptop has a truelife display which is great for movies + I have a Pioneer DVD deck in my Explorer so I'm covered for movies. The Axim is good @ GPS nav so that is mainly why I got it (plus keeping track of appointments/tasks).
Quite a few oversea flights I have used my X51v, 3 Mugen Power 1800mAh batteries, 4-8 Gbyte of CSI or movies and Noise Cancelling headphones.
Works like a charm - easy end light - works with music, movies, games as well as internet/mail connectivity all in one.
I do have a PSP as well, but dispite that the picture quality is higher (on UMD - not on self squezed MP4) the generel usability is not as easy. The movies cannot be in DivX or Xvid but has to be repacked. External subtitles are not possible. I use VO subtitles a lot on airplanes to get everything in the dialog dispite the noise on the plane.
So - "no good for movies" - it works for me - and has done so for the last year.
Well since my original post, I did not watch movies on the axim again because of the "polarization" and shimmer on the screen. Its really annoying. In fact, I purchased a treo I do miss having the power of a full-fledged PDA. Do you think the new HP PDAs will have less green polarization?
I don't want to resort to an iPod for watching video, it's just too darn small.
There is a shimmer or shine to the screen. It needs to be held at just the right ange to see the video without the shimmer or glare. I'm coming from an ipod and quality of the screen was much better.
I am disappointed.
And its not the encoding. I have encoded with guides above with no problems now. and encoded with different methods. I am commenting on the screen itself.

what do you think? let me know.
Hmm ... I never considered the viewability a problem at all. I have the X50/50 (QVGA) and videos I've viewed on it are just fine. Obviously I'm not expecting it to be high-def video, but it's fine as far as I can tell.

If you don't like the X51v's disply, Why Did You Buy It? Seriously though, if you rotate the screen so the buttons are on the left, and use TCPMP, you should be fine, just suck it up, and hold it at the right angle, or use a PDA stand. I've had my Axim X51v for three years, and been watching video of all kinds on it from day one. I think, that for the money, and considering overall versatility, flexibility, and the sheer number of things besides watching movies you can do with this thing, the X51v outshines by far any current competition.
Golly, all the times and places I have watched video on my X50V I was never aware of any shine or shimmer on the screen. Videos looked as good as my TV to me. Must be your device.
I was just gonna post something similar to this. heh.. The display on the Axim has a bad viewing angle. Its almost like the old DTSN laptop screens. After having a PSP for a while I don't think I'm gonna bother using my X51v for video, its just too painful.
i wouldnt really limit it to the quality of the x30's screen quality i've used more pda's then alot of ppl. tbh i wont say x30 has the best screen. the colors are cold and saturation isnt the best. but the problem you are talking about is i believe mostly related to the quality of the transreflective screen used on the back of the lcd. its kinda creates a negative of the image unless its held properly. on the other hand if you are using a hp pda you will complain about another aspect of the issue, colors being too warm. and with angeled view points yellowish tint especially with 1945.. palm on the other hand has a much better transreflective surface on the back of the screen. doesnt shine too much or turn negative with certain angles, but colors are a little off... bla bla bla ..i think its a little bit of trade off with every pda you get. but most pda's do what they are supposed to do. x30's i would have to agree is a bit annoying about the screen giving u shimmer
