This is a whole new realm that I'm looking into since podcasts are becoming so popular. Can the x51 play itunes music? Or play podcasts or video?
I don't even know where to start and I'm not very familiar with any of this since I don't have an ipod. I appreciate any help that you can offer.

Most podcasts are recorded in mp3 format, which is not an iPod specific format (though any pocket music player worth more than £2 can play mp3s) and so can be played using the Axim.
For finding and downloading podcasts on your axim I would recommend the fantastic RSS program Egress (which I am looking to buy soon). Get it at http://www.garishkernels.net/egress.shtml
I don't know about TCPMP support for the iTunes specific format... is it AC3 or AAC? It might be able to play it, though don't quote me on that ;)

My experience is that any music I purchased from the iTunes store online is NOT playable on my Axim, because it's in an mpeg4 format with copy protection (note the little lock on the file icon). Apparently, there are complicated ways around this, by recording through my sound card, or burning to CD and ripping it.
Any music that I rip from CD's is fine, and transfers just fine. Do note that you can select the format for ripped files in iTunes' settings: mp3, AAC, etc.
Also, I've copied files directly from some CD's that had separate files from the "audio" CD on another disc.

I listen to podcasts every day, using Audiobay 2.2, from AcroDesign Technologies.
It is $9.99 at Handango - link here
The program works with mp3's and mp4's -- It plays the mp4's using Windows Media Player. It is a bit quirky to load the podcasts, but is really realiable once you get going with it. AcroDesign's tech support is great, too.
This is a different product from AcroDesign's software for recording podcasts on your WM device - and cheaper. I haven't heard much buzz about it, but I had tried Feeder Reeder, and was not thrilled with the interface. This is a particularly good product if you are just interested in the audio files themselves, and not the text portion of the RSS feeds.
I buy songs from iTunes a lot and they work fine, and I record all my podcasts on it, and play the ones from mobilitysite, so both the items mentioned in the title will work fine
I use iTunes on my PC at home to download podcasts in the evening and morning; copy them to my Axim and listen to them using GSPlayer (others like to use MortPlayer which is similar but has a lot more skins).
[You should be able to find GSPlayer and Mortplayer with a quick google search.]
I have tried a few different utilities to get podcasts (free ones only) and it seems like they all use iTunes, so I have not found anything else, but would jump off iTunes if I found something without needing iTunes.
(I tried Juice but it needs iTunes, so I deleted it. I tried one directly on my Axim, but couldn't get it working right.)

For those of you who are able to play music that you purchased from the iTunes Store, please share how you did this. I wonder if I can't because I purchased iTunes collections of various artists, rather than a single artist's album.
"Xilisoft Audio Converter provides an easy and completed way to convert between various audio formats, such as MP3, WAV, WMA, MP4, M4A, AAC.
One of featured function is that the software can convert M4P to MP3 With the help of M4P2MP4 (Free) or HYMN (Free) when you use the old version iTunes, It is a M4P Converter. You can convert M4P to MP3 easily.
If you use iTunes 5.0 or later, Tunebite can record and convert M4P to MP3, WMA or OGG directly. Another, you can also burn the .m4p files to CDs with iTunes and then rip CD to MP3."
"Tunebite can re-record while playing MP4 format music tracks and save them as new files. Tunebite supported formats (MP3, WMA, OGG) can be played on regular MP3-players without problem."
"Basically, protected files should not be copied and handed over to third parties. Tunebite qualifies to copy DRM protected music files, videos or audio books. By recording files while playing, Tunebite disposes of a lossless digital method to convert copy protected WMA, M4P, M4B, AA, WMV and M4V files to MP3, OGG, WMA, WAV, MP4, MPEG-4 or WMV format files. Through this process, a private copy is created only for personal use."
I am fond of podcasts and found the best tool to be hubdog (from RPN a canadian company). I use the version 1 of hubdog (I have tried the version 2 but I nelieve it is still a work in progress and need some more time to be up to expectations. It is free and by far the best of what I have used. I shows exactly the same interface in pocketpc and in the PC. You can add feeds be it mp3 (true podcasts) or video from the likes of BBC and CNN. I use TCPMP to play all files (hubdog creates automatically playlists for all stations). It is a very nice combination and very useful.

Juice doesn't need iTunes. That is just the default media player. You can change that under >File>Preferences>Player.
i used hubdog 2.0 but it needs to connect to the net to watch the videos...is there anyway that it will download daily (as SPB insight) the podcasts to my dell?

I am trying to get juice to work with a couple of podcasts I want to get but it does not like the URL i am giving it. Can someone help me? The site where the link to the podcast is here
i used the mobsync to get them to my Axim and I downloaded TCPMP and installed it. But now TCPMP will not play the podcasts it say unknown file format.
I also had given up on Juice.
I went to iTunes for a while, then tried Doppler.
I started noticing, on my Axim, that the podcasts were months old. I had listened to a podcast that was recent and the next one downloaded was from Thanksgiving or Christmas. This happened more that once, and with more than one podcast.
So, I'm back to iTunes as of this morning.
The only thing I'd really like improved on iTunes is scheduling actual times to check for new podcasts. Now, I get new podcasts before I get in the shower, and then copy them to my Axim before breakfast.
