The volume of songs transferred to my Axim seem very loud even at the lowest volume setting. Any ideas how I can re-record the MP3's or WMA files to a lower volume setting? Also many of the songs have the "beach type" sound in the background even though they have been copied from a CD.

I noticed the same thing. I got around this by downloading other players (like PocketMVP or PocketMusic) and they have an equalizer built in. I end up dropping the decible level by like 10 or 15.
