I simply don't understand how I get beyond having the links displayed on my Axim X30 and getting an error message "Cannot find 'rtsp://rmv8.bbc..... .ra...' when I try and use them?

Hi Engjr

Could you tell me which station and what programme you're trying to get to please?

Cheers, Kronalias

Thanks for this, jogga.

Under U.S. law (I hadn't even considered that you were thinking under the laws of a different jurisdiction), you may well be right. The BBC website is, however, exclusively governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any provisions in their terms of use will be interpreted in accordance with that law. No English court would entertain the notion that what Kronalias is doing constitutes piracy. Indeed, I cannot see how that argument would even get off the ground. But I do see a case for copyright infringement, and the BBC would certainly be entitled to pursue civil remedies.

I think it highly unlikely, however, that they would bother.

Gah, I enjoy a good legal debate. Not often I get to put my education to good use on Aximsite (I'm fairly rubbish at the whole Axim/technology thing).

If you really want to know about copyright in England and Wales, then the UK Patent Office has a decent website.

Anyway, I don't think Kronalias should hold his breath for a cease-and-desist order from a UK judge. The most likely result of all this, if any, is that a crusty BBC exec, employed solely to limit the ripping off of their intellectual property, will phone Kronalias and "have a quiet word".

Hi engjr, they're ok on my X51v.

Do you have Real installed on your X30?

If not, then there's a post further down the Multimedia forum which will tell you how to install it.

If so, could you try the following please?

1. On your Pocket Internet Explorer please go to the Beebotron, Radio 3, 3 for All with Brian Kay. Don't click the link, press and hold it and you should get a popup box. Select the option 'Copy Address'

2. Open Real and then File => Open Location. Paste (Ctl V) the link in and press ok in the top right corner

And it should play!

Would you let me know if this works please?

Cheers, Kronalias

Can't stream anything from anywhere in RealOne

Hello Kronalias,

I've been trying to stream BBC programs from your links, but in fact I can't get RealOne Player (2.0.0.28) on my Axim X51v to stream anything from anywhere. My Axim is networked over Wi-FI fine, and I can't work out what the problem is. I always get a "Request Failed" message if I open a valid link or file (needless to say my laptop can stream them fine).

I thought perhaps it was a router/firewall issue and have set up port triggering (7070 TCP trigger, 6970-7170 UDP in) on a fixed IP for my Axim as suggested elsewhere, but still no joy at all. I also tried DMZ which also did nothing.

Any ideas on how I can actually get this piece of software to stream anything would be great (let alone the BBC content!). A lot of googling around has still left RealOne doing absolutely nothing on my PDA.

Why the hell do we have to pay for the biased substandard crud we fondly call the BBC. Being a Scot and having to watch a service that doesn't serve my needs or interests seems ridiculous.

Are you making money from this Kron ?

Illegal ? its a matter of perspective, I think it should be illegal to have people pay for a service they didn't ask for.

Anyway these are just quick thoughts, I am sure the clever boys and girls of this site will enlighten me.

Hey Kronalias, I just tried your Beebotron, and all I can say is

Excelent

I said something along the lines of "why did you bother" way back when you first did it. I take all that back unreservedly. Nice job, much better and easier than using the BBC pages. Thanks again.

#23 Hi rpmedia. You have the latest version of Real, and it *should* work with your X51v – that’s the configuration I have. I am concerned by your ‘… Request Failed message if I open a valid link or file…’. The giveaway is the file… If you can’t open a .ra or .rm file on your Ax then Real isn’t going to work.

If I have misinterpreted your post and you haven’t tried opening a Real file on your pda then this could be a good place to start. Go get a .ra or .rm file onto your pda and see if you can open this in Real. This is easier said than done and you’ll need to use your PC…

You can’t save .ra type files in Windows by right-clicking and then Save As - you’ll need an rtsp download manager (free or a trial version - Google is your friend) and a link to a Real Audio file (these are the links Beebotron provides). Right click on one, copy the URL to the clipboard and paste it into your download manager. Download the file to your PC and transfer it to your pda by Activesync, email or network share.

If you can’t open this file in Real ( File => Open File ) remove Real, reinstall and try again.

When (if) this works try the same url in Real. This is the one you right-clicked on in Beebotron - bet you wished you’d written this down now – and you need this type of link because it’ll get you straight into the server, without the Beeb doing any IP blocking which may get in the way ( File => Open Location ). The site *must* be an rtsp streaming site (i.e. using a Helix type server). Real on a PC will stream from an http site; Real on a pda won’t.

If this works the you’re in business. If not, then something else is getting in the way, so you may have to backup your data and remove programs one by one, checking if Real works after each deinstall.

If this doesn’t work it’s time for a hard reset and then reload and try Real before loading anything else. Hope this helps - please post back the outcome!

#24 Hi AlbaJoe. Nope, there’s no money in this for me, and I’m not after any! Good game yesterday, albeit Jonny Wilkinson 1, Scotland 0….

#25 Hi again Box, and thanks for the nice words!

Cheers all,

Kronalias

some joy, but still no streaming

Hello Kronalias,

Thanks for the tips. I reinstalled realone player first. Using a download manager to get a BBC ra file, realone player will play it back fine, which is a start! Still no luck on the streaming though. Previously I had simply clicked on your BBC links and always got this
"request failed" message. The first time I tried typing inthe URL as you suggest I got a time out message (not seen before) but since then only the "Request Failed" message each time, even when typing in a different valid URL from your lists.

I haven't tried uninstalling other apps yet, but would they interfere with the connection? I only have a few things like PocketDivX, TCPMP, Skype, etc (none of these running at the smae time as RealOne).

Any further advice? Did you have to setup anything on your firewall to get it to work?

Hi rpmedia

The firewall shouldn’t get in the way of anything from the Beeb’s site (or mine, as it uses identical links), and you shouldn’t need to muck about with DMZs or port forwarding for TCP/UDP ports.

But I have been wrong occasionally, so you might try running bareback to eliminate the firewall as a potential problem. You can probably do this from your Ax with your other PCs disconnected from the net (which would be safer).

You mentioned earlier that you’d set up your Axim on a fixed (static) ip address. If you have, then you should set your router’s DHCP address range to not interfere with the static IP you’ve set on the Ax (i.e. let your DHCP addresses go from say 0 to 200 and set your fixed IP on the Ax to something outside this range, say 215). This will prevent any IP address clashes. There’s a better explanation than I’ve just given in this link:
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto...ip-address.asp

Just on the offchance, could you check that there’s really nothing that starts automatically and may be running in the background on your Ax? Have a look in:
My Device / Windows / Startup
The bog-standard things you should see are links for BTTray (Bluetooth), odClientCeAutoLaunchSmart (Odyssey Client), poutlook (Pocket OE), SplashV (I think that’s the little startup screen that appears after a hard reset) and WirelessIcon (the wifi control thingy). Anything else is something which you’ve added.

Finally, just because no program is running doesn’t mean that your Ax isn’t slightly out of kilter. Any number of progs will hit the registry, which may have knock-on effects. Re the apps on your pda, I don’t run PocketDivX so can’t comment – but I do run TCPMP (an astonishingly outstanding piece of software!) and Skype without any problems.

Hope this helps, best of luck!

Its the firewall...

Hello Kronalias,

It is definitely the firewall, turn this off and all is well, I can stream perfectly.
I guess I'll need to play around with the firewall settings a bit more to try to
work out why the settings I had (including DMZ which I thought opened everything
to the given IP address) won't let RealOne through, I've probably misunderstood something. It is a NetGear box btw.

Thanks for all your help so far, I'll do some more firewall experiments...
