Question DVD to WMV vs XVid

I'm real new at using this wonderful piece of equipment I now have, but am traveling and learning how to rip and convert DVD'S to small compressed files that fit on my axim x50v. I already have one movie done so i'm getting the hang of it, but the file size is 446 MB. i've heard it can be compressed further if i convert to xvid, then someone else told me i wont be able to play xvid on windows mobile media? also what is a good ripping/ converting program?

Use WinAVI to convert your files to xvid, and set the resolution to what you feel is good. 320x240 or 640x480. Install TCPMP on your PPC to play any xvid or divx files you come across.

You can play them using Coreplayer or (TCMP which is free). I use Omniquiti Lathe(not free) to convert my dvds to xvid. It works extremely well. Allows you to change resolution size, compression rate, sound quality and shows you in real time how big the file size is.

There are other tools you can use too, some are free as well. Just search this site for some guides.

Lots of ways to do this

There are as many ways to convert DVDs and videos to fit on your Axim as there are opinions on the best way to do so.

There are some comercial programs that do this for you. They vary in cost and in features. You can check out the many PPC software sites to choose one.

There are some freeware programs that you can use as well:
- FairUse Wizard
- Sompy Encoder
- AutoGordianKnot

And there are some professional level methods that take up a great deal of time and use a whole slate of programs to accomplish.

I have used all of the above programs, and for quality vs. speed and ease of use, I prefer using AutoGordian Knot.

AGK will require you to rip the DVD to your hard disk first. You can find several programs to do this, but I am still using an old copy of DVD Shrink and it has only failed me once.

The other reason I like AutoGK is the ability to rotate the video 90 degrees counter-clockwise, which allows me to use the Axim on it's right side. FUW rotates the video in the other direction, which I don't like.

Hope this helps!

Try the lite version of Fairuse Wzzard, which is free, it compresses dvds up to 700mb , while the paid version converts dvds to any size .avi files. Use TCPMP player(CORE PLAYER) to play them.
