since Core chokes on wmv sometimes, anyone know of a freeware converter to take a wmv to an mpeg?
thanks,
david
Take a look here. Also, you might want to look at PocketDivXEncoder, though this doesn't work with WMVs...but it's still a nice free app.

It doesn't work with VOB files either and as most of the DVDs I have come across are VOB it is next to useless. For very little money in real terms I would recommend PocketDVD Studio...great interface, great granularity in terms of the setting that you can set, etc = great output.

Hm, I just converted a VOB file off a DVD into an AVI and played it using PocketDivXEncoder, but I think this particular DVD isn't encrypted.

Nope, just doesn't seem to work with VOBs for me (and there is a lot of confirmatory chatter to this effect on a number of forums that I have checked). Perhaps I and others are unlucky.

I tried it this morning with a different, newer dvd and it failed with an "unsupported class" error message, so I don't think you're unlucky, aximusmajor. :)
