I am a newbie when it comes to multimedia on my Axim, my biggest jump was going to install TCMP or however you say it. I have recently been looking for a .mp4 player, any ideas? Either a "codec" for TCPMP, or some other program makes no difference to me. And please, I don't want to know about any programs that will do it, but cost money. I cannot justify buying a program when TCPMP is already so good.
I tried it a while ago, didn't work, should go try again. Have there been "updates" to TCPMP that i'm not aware of? I'm terrible at remembering to patch/update things.
No, there aren't any updates at this time. BetaPlayer should be showing up sometime, as the successor to TCPMP, and it =should= have MP4 support. CorePlayer definitely does, but it costs money... and contrary to what some people have been saying, doesn't dial home every time you use it. Heck, it's not even online-capable yet (can't do streaming audio).
I would just pick up Coreplayer. I know you originally said that you didn't want to spend any money, but I think there is a coupon code somewhere here that knocks it down to $15. Do a search for the coupon and reimburse the developers a little for all their hard work.
here's the link to the thread which in turn links you to the coupon.

Reason: add link
I personally wouldn't spend even $15 for Coreplayer. TCPMP works just fine for me.

An "X" in my post shows I'm posting from my Axim.
The AAC plugin's probably been killed - as noted, it violated copyright, and telling him to search here for it's like advocating piracy... which is a position against the rules of AximSite.
Plus, the AAC support in CorePlayer's about 10-15% faster at least than that of the test AAC plugin from way back when, in my experience. I've tried encoding with XviD and AAC sound, and the difference with the same file between the two programs is remarkable, at least in the benchmarking and CPU usage.

I thought tcpmp was open source, so cant people do what they want to it.

Until the Open Source stuff starts copying proprietary code - AAC is NOT an Open Source codec; OGG is, but AAC is a patented codec, and when the license holders say 'pull it', it's either 'pull it or be sued out of existence for violating copyright'. That's why CoreCodec had to pull the AAC and AVC plugins - and part of why you pay for CorePlayer now (they're paying licensing fees).

Well that sucks, its kind of like why they cant play realmedia files in tcpmp also.
