Video and voice sync

Hi All,

I've been following the sticky tutorial by BRADISH but have run into the following problem encoding. DVD Decrypter, no problems; Gordian Knott, no problems; transfer the finished file to my X51v, open TCMP and the video is always out of sync with the voice! I've done 2 different movies with the same result. The character speaks and the voice follows about a half a second later.

Film 1: CARS - Disney PIXAR; Film 2: High School Musical

We're off on a family holiday next week so I wanted to get my pda ready for entertaining the kids ;-)

Any ideas anyone?

Try using the FairUse tutorial. I was more impressed with the finished products from FairUse and SUPER than AutoGK. When I played back the finished products stacked via AVIsynth AutoGK seemed to have the poorest product visually to my eyes. Also do 1 pass not 2 pass when encoding in fairuse and move the quality sliding bar to quality not speed to get a great picture.

Is the process described above legit?

Thanks Tyborg, I'll give it a whirl and see how things come out. I will post back so to close the thread if all works out ok, or if not to seek further help.

Regards

I use Fairuse. I bring the audio down to mp3 @ 96kp/s. I rip the movie to 700mb but if file size is an issue 350mb works just as well on my Axim.

I only go to 700mb so I can burn to a dvd later for the kids to watch in their portable dvd player.

Thanks New2PDA & Tyborg,

I left FairUse to do a film last night and I was impressed that it also turned off the pc when it was finished. I've got 2 files now, one is an .avi file which plays perfectly on my X51v and the other is an mp3 sound track which also plays perfectly - I was expecting to find one file which had both? Have I missed something!? Do I now need to pass these files through another program to join them together?

Another question aside, how do configure FairUse to make widescreen films pda friendly - Cars plays only as a long strip across the middle of the screen? If this is answered in another forum - just put see forum and I'll search it out; if not then maybe it would be good for other users to be able to find the answer here too.

Thanks everyone.

Wow it seems as though some higher power just doesn't want you ripping DVDs. No, Fairuse has never encoded my audio and video seperate. I don't even know what setting you could have picked that would do that. I just ran through and encoded a short clip and didn't even see where I could choose a setting to do that.

There should be a Fairuse.log.txt file in the same directory as your finished .avi. That might have some clues about if it ran into an error. Mine spits out the .avi file and thats it.

In order to get widescreen a little more friendly for my axim I crop the ends slightly. The window that comes up after it indexes chains has an frame from the video on it. To the left of the window there is a cropping region. As you change the values here it will show you on the displayed frame how much you are cropping. Since DVD resolution is usually 720x480 and my axim is 640x480 I crop off 40 from each side so that the resolution width will now be 640 wide. Then I crop the black bars of the top and the bottom. Of course with the wide screen this means you are losing picture and the actual resolution ends up being around 640x304. The more of the picture you drop from the right and left the less of the black bars you will see on the top and bottom when you view it on your axim. You don't want to do to much or it will be harder to see what is going on though. Just play with it and find what works for you. You don't want to force the 4:3 resolution to completely get rid of the black bars because this will just stretch the clip and things will look distorted.

For experimenting before you convert the whole project since it takes so long just choose a shorter chain. In step 4 of the Fairuse guide FU usually finds the full length movie chain and you just press next. Instead choose a shorter preview or trailer chain that is only a couple minutes long. This will give you an idea of what your clip will turnout like. Make sure in the AR(aspect ratio) column you pick one that is the same as the main clip. So with a widescreen 16/9 movie make sure you don't pick a 4/3 chain or you won't be able to check and see how your cropping looks, because you won't have anything to crop its the same AR as the axim. Now converting this smaller chain will give you a quicker clip to test settings on and then once you get them the way you want it go back and do the full clip with your new found settings.

As far as getting the video and audio to seperate like that I don't know. Were there any places that you deviated from the guide? Maybe try another DVD and see if you get the same results from that one. Good luck.

Thanks so much Tyborg, it worked!!!

An interesting note though. When I got the movie chain list, I had 2 chains, both exactly the same size, with the same languages and same time length. The 1st time around I picked the 1st chain, this time I selected the second. Why would there be 2 the same?

The other comment is that Bradish uses FU 2.4LE and I have 2.5LE, so there's a few things that have changed - one is that in 2.5LE I wasn't offered the IVTC option, in fact each time FU choose Native Mode for me. The other thing was that on the page where you select the encoding setting, the resolutions offered are very different to the screen Bradish publishes in his tutorial.

The main thing is that I'm there. I have a pda version of Cars to entertain my daughter on holiday and I'm now playing with some more films.

YIPEEE!!!!!
