No video in VirtualDub playback

Got VD to open an Xvid file, now my problem is one that I've come across before but never bothered to try fixing--VirtualDub displays only a black screen, no picture. Audio plays back perfectly.

The movie--including video, of course--plays perfectly in WMP9.

I've done some searching to no avail....is there a fix for this or am I at a dead end for real this time?

-I downloaded divx 505 (basic version), and installed the nemo codec pack some time ago.
-VD version is 1.4.9.
-XP

The only time I've run into a black screen with good audio was when I tried to tun run an .avi with way to high frame & bitrate.
Are you encoding for 15 - 20 FPS ?

not using any unusual settings, pretty much just the defaults. i've had this problem a few times already, but like I said, never felt like dealing with it before.
