divx encoding problems

I am obviously new at this. I followed the guide above to encode an avi clip with the codec from divx.com. The codec that shows that I have after the download is v.5.0.5, and I have had 4.12 for a while as well. I tried encoding with both codecs and I always get a message that reads "this file contains an incompatible video format 1" No problems playing on my desktop. Would anyone be able to give me an assist with this? Thanks

Mike
