Talyn, VDubs error message... how to encode in mp3?

hey talyn, the VDub error message i was getting with that movie file was "VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CGR calues during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 0 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder (bitrate:192.0+-0.0kbps). i tried messing with the skew, but its really difficult to do it manually. how do i do it in mp3? what do you suggest?

i've decided that for the size it takes up, i'm happy with a 160 bitrate. and if you turn the drop tolerance all the way up its quite smooth. however even on the files that the audio sync is right on, turning the drop tolerance all the way unsyncs it alittle. i'm thinking about skewing it negative alittle so i can keep the drop tolerance all the way up. every try this?

is there a virtual dub forum???

I had that message once, and I really wish I could remember what source file gave it. But I basically said "whatever, just encode the thing" and it worked.

I'll try reading in some of my source files that I still have lying around to see if any of them do that though.

I've never gone through the trouble of splitting the audio and re-encoding it as MP3 then trying to remerge it. The only split audio I ever have to work with is from ripping a DVD, and the audio is .wav anyway, not .mp3.

thats basically what i did too, but when i played it on the axim, started syncing behind. well, i guess i'll just keep skewing it back until i get it close enough. i'm trying the skew back, drop tolerance up thing right now.

Ok, I did find one that does that: the 'Join the Empire' Star Wars fan film. I just clicked OK and encoded it anyway. But as I've said on several occasions, I always use the Lame MP3 codec rather than default Fraunhofer one. In mono, Fraunhofer will always go out of sync almost immediately but stays in sync in stereo. (Although I've read several articles that state that Fraunhofer will lose sync over a period of time regardless of mono or stereo) Every single video I've encoded using Lame stays perfectly in sync when played back on the Pocket PC. Lame gets my highest vote for 'must have' right along with DivX itself.

Here's a direct link to the Lame codec at afterdawn.com, which also has tons of great audio/video encoding info.

Yes, encoding in stereo will increase the file size. Depending on length of the video, it may not be that much of an increase, but something like a full movie would be a more significant hit.

Typically, I'll use 22050 kHz at 32 kbps CBR mono. Lame prefers to use stereo, so you may need to check 'Show all formats' to get everything to display, depending on how your source video was encoded.
