Removing choppiness with Windows Media Video
I've been dinking around with encoding video using Sracer's tutorial. However, it seems that unless I use anything other than CBR (constant bit rate) the thing skips frames.
Of course, when trying to watch a movie like the Matrix, VBR Peak seems to have its advantages as the screen doesn't get all blocky when an action scene comes. That happens at CBR.
Here's my settings when I encode:
Res is at 320x240 (widescreen)
Avg vid rate: 120K
Peak vid rate: 400K
frames per sec: 24
Audio: 48K mono
Key frame interval: 2 sec
Decoder complexity: simple
Peak buffer size: 30 sec
Windows Media 9 codecs for both audio and video.
Now with these settings, I get about 140MB-160MB for the Matrix, depending on how I tweak the settings. Not bad for a 2 hour movie.
I use 48K sound as anything less seems too "man in the cannish." I've tweaked the buffer thinking that having more of the movie at a time in memory might help. I've also tried ranges in the fps from 20 to 30 and that didn't seem to help either.
Is there a way to see how many fps are actually being displayed while the movie is playing? What could I do to smooth it out.
Also worth noting is that I'm playing this from a 512MB CF card as well.
Another question is if I drop down to 15 fps, will the motion still appear smooth?
Thanks for any help,
Super

From what I have heard, with videos the Axim doesn't like anything more than 15 fps. When I first started encoding videos, I tried using WMV, but I just couldn't get it to look good. I would suggest trying the guide for converting to AVI if you can't get the WMV to your liking.

I've used WME9 to encode WMV at 20fps and it plays just fine on my PPC2002 Axim. If the new WMP on WM2003 (don't ya just love all these abbreviations? :p ) is so much better, it may be able to handle a higher framerate as well.
With DivX and PocketMVP, I can get 30fps in portrait mode without the Axim even breaking a sweat, and 24-25fps seems to be the maximum for fullscreen landscape mode.

A newbie here. I'm using Dup-DVD to transfer dvds into mpgs then using Windows Media Encoder 7 (with 8 codecs) and choosing the default Faster PDA profile. Video comes out only very very slightly choppy. Audio is very good. Only problem is every once in awhile, a video has choppy audio. (And, I'm getting from 95mb to 180mb of finished WMV.) Hope this helps someone.
Have the 400mhz Axim, PPC2002, PIII 600mhz with 8mb ATI video. Sloooooow process, but fairly faithful.

Just for clarification, the 20fps WMV I encoded was portrait view. I haven't tried landscape with WME yet, but the landscape with Movie Maker 2 sucked, to put it bluntly.

Are there any other programs that can play WMV encoded movies? I'm wondering if it's a bug with WM9 for PPC.
I'm using this on an iPaq 2210. While it wasn't as choppy as the Axim with 2003, it's still a problem.
Thanks for the suggestions ... keep them coming.

15 fps should still be alright. A lot of quality quicktime only uses only 15 fps and still looks good, I don't see why wmv wouldn't. Just encoded a 22 min episode of Family Guy with 20 fps, came to about 32 megs in wmv

Look for a program called Cleaner from Discreet. I started out using the WinMovieMaker 2.0 for a while and then my partner introduced me to Cleaner and I've been using it ever since. I plan to go back through and redo the videos that I made in WMM2.0 with cleaner once I get more time. I'll admit that it is a pain in the butt to learn how to use at first, but after you get the hang of it, it's pretty cool. It can convert MPEG, Real, Quicktime, Windows and a couple other formats. I don't know the costs since he already owned it but i'm impressed so far.

I have all my programs on my SD card as well.
How can you make the memory slider stick?
