having the backlight off also saves the backlight from fading, happens in handhelds as they get older

Backlight dying? hope not

Do you have any idea on how long the back lights last, more then a year I hope?

A lot more then a year, I believe they have a lifetime of 35000 hours on

I think that the major power consumer of the Ax when playing mp3's is the cpu, not the screen. I could be wrong, I still turn of the screen myself but I think that someone did some tests a while back.

A late answer to someone elses question. I use WMA files at 64kbps, they're supposed to be just like 128kbps mp3 (they sound ok to me - this ain't exactly a hifi system). The best thing for me was that you can use WinAmp's WMA writer plugin to create them incredibly easily.
