Divx problem on 4150

I have ripped my Xfiles series 5 DVD using Divx 3 low motion codec. But when I play it using Betaplayer on my 4150 the screen becomes scrambled when there is any movement.

However, it plays fine on my PC.

Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this without re-ripping.

Not really. Problems like this mostly comes from encoding. Motion pictures generally have a fair amount of motion and using a low motion codec may be a problem.

That's just it. Playing fine on both PCs is wonderful but don't expect it to play the same on your PPC. This is because your desktop PC has more system resources then your PPC. You can't compare a desktop that most likely has over 256MB of RAM memory and probably over 1GHz cpu to a PPC that has a 400MHz cpu and a fraction of the memory. That is why encoding for the PPC is extremely important. You can use bitrates that is very high and it will play fine on your PPC and is very crappy on your PPC during playback. You have to use bitrates that is optimized for your PPC that will play well with the PPC's resources.

For example, I use a video bitrate of 200kbs and the audio is at 32Hz Mono. Using PocketMVP this plays very well on my h2215 and the quality is excellent. Now play this on the desktop and you will also find that it plays as well but probably alot smaller and the sound is not as good as other videos that you encoded.

Other videos encoded at the same bitrate, same fps, etc, etc play fine on my PPC.

I think its that Betaplayer cannot deal with div3 encoded files very well. My guess it is optimised for the version4 and 5 codecs and there hasnt been much testing with the older div3 codec.

The bitrate is well within Betaplayers capabilities on my 4150.

Looks like I'll have to reencode using divx 5 codec. On another note, how well does Betaplayer play XVid compared to Divx ? I normally encode with XVid for video on my PC but had heard that this is not so good for PPC.

That may very well be. I use the DivX 5 codec and my files play fine with BetaPlayer and PocketMVP. I just use PocketMVP more because I like it over BetaPlayer.

Could you send me a smaller sample of DivX3 video which doesn't play on BetaPlayer? I tested a few of my divx3 files and they worked fine. DivX3 is not a priority, but if it's a simple bug, i will try to fix it. Thanks. picard at demoscene dot hu
