uploading movies to axim?!

Hi everyone,
Just to start off, I'd like to thank all you guys for making this site so useful. Well i have a question on movies and the axim. How long does it usually take to put a 200mb movie to a compact flash card. I use the cradle and it takes so long i never go through with it. Does a card reader/writer make the process faster? Please answer back. Thanks.

The cradle take forever. Never use it. I haven't used a USB card reader, but I have a PCMCIA adaptor for my CF card, and transfering a movie that would have taken 30 min. by cradle takes about 2 minuets with adaptor. I think using a reader would be faster though.

I second that! Invest in a USB CF reader/writer. It is so much faster than using activesync. Part of the reason why activesync takes so long is the conversion process copying a file from the PC to the Axim. There is no need for this conversion to use the files. The conversion process is on by default when you install Activesync. You can turn it off but I am not sure how much help it will be.

A 6-in-1 Media Reader/Writer is very cheap these days and you can use it for your CF cards as well as SD/MMC and any other media cards you may have.

Yeah. I am using card readers almost exclusively to transfer files.
The only time I am using a cradle is when I have to install a program which has a win32 installer.

To answer questions, to copy a 200 mb movie is about 6 minutes
on a USB1 reader.

See, the other thing is that using a reader you can avoid at least some of those nasty issues with CF and SD cards becoming corrupted. I am not saying they won't, I am just saying it's going to be less likely. I have 2 CF cards, 128 and 256 and never had a problem with them. BUT I am only using readers.

BTW, you might want to be careful with the cheapo, noname card readers. I bought one a couple of months ago simply because it was a fairly low price.

Result: Smartmedia slot does not work, CF freezes up on large file transfers (ca. 80 mb and up).

So I went and got me another one which works properly.
The two brands which I have actually tried and know they work is PQI and IntelliFlash.

Good luck!

The reason transfering though the Axim is so much slower is because it uses a serial cable for the actual transfer. If that's incorrect it's not my fault. I read it on this site somewhere.

Whether if you sync via a USB cradle or a serial cable, file transfers are still much slower than using a USB card reader. I use the Dazzle 6-in-1 reader. It works great for me. And I have never had problems with any of my cards.

And also DoubleK is right. I have never experienced problems other have experienced with their cards. I believe that this is due to using another means of transferring files instead of relying on activesync.
