Hmm Just rotate 90 degrees...

I'm looking for a quick (read: easy) way to rotate avi/mpgs which I've taken with a digital camera, to watch easily on wmp on the pc.

It was suggested I look here, but with a "quick reference" consisting of 319 replies, I think I'm in the wrong place. :crooked:

I'm not encoding dvd's, I'm not making mps...I'm just interested in rotating small ones I have (in portrait, which are lying on their sides) to a vertical aspect.

This isn't the first place I've looked at "how to's" which read like my thermodynamics final... I'm guessing there IS no easy way to make this happen.

Thanks for all advice.

most programs have this functon built-in, what program r u using to watch your movies? however, the screen might get cut off based on the space of the screen it takes up.

I'm not watching movies, exactly.

I'm using windows media player on the pc, and I want to add the mpgs into FlipAlbum. I can't rotate the dang things in ANY software I have...

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't seen any editors that will rotate an mpeg. If they will play on your device at all, just use software rotation in PocketMVP or PocketTV whichever you use.

If you convert it to AVI using VirtualDub, it has a rotate video filter that does the job nicely.

I actually have them IN avi, and eventually need them in mpg. I guess I need to look at virtualdub? Would it rotate the mpg or the avi?

I'm not having trouble on the axim, as I said. This is all on the pc. Where I need to insert the ROTATED mpg into other software.

Sheesh... Seems like such a simple thing. :)

Yes it does seem like a simple task, I don't know why it isn't supported...

VirtualDub can only create AVI files, so while it can rotate/resize/whatever else you want - it can't make an MPEG out of it. However, if you were to create a rotated AVI, you can then use TMPGEnc can create an MPEG version for you for importing to other apps.

Yes, thanks, that's the method I'm using. I'd had the avi-mpg step already understood, it was the rotate-the-silly-avi step that I had to find. :D

Thanks for drums4ever, I've got the cookbook steps I need in vitualdub to rotate the avi to the portrait aspect I wanted.

For anyone else searching this forum on this one, simple topic, download virtualdub here:

http://www.virtualdub.org/

Unzip, then run the exe. Use 'file' to open the avi you want to rotate. Then select 'video' then 'filter' then 'add'(I think). You should get a list of choices, one of which is 'rotate;' select that. From the next pop-up, select 'left by 90'.

At this point I just said 'file' and 'save as' and gave it the new avi name I wanted. It processed in a few seconds (none of my avis are very large).

There are thousands of options in these video programs, which can be daunting if you're looking to do just one thing.

Thanks for all the help, folks. I hope this helps others, if they stumble on this thread, too.
