which is better? I use mp3's for my player, but I understand from this group that wma's are smaller files- how does the sound quality compare for both?

I can't tell the difference. The real beauty of WMA is that MS has made it very easy to generate content from your cds, and get it onto the device.

Make sure to adjust the copy settings for WMP ... Tools, Options, Copy Music tab ... and set the quality to low end to get nice small files. The quality is still ok imo, but you get to make the call.
Go to Devices tab and select your CD drive, and make sure copy mode is digital.

I did have trouble trying to transfer music directly to the SD card, so I started copying files to My Doc (it tells you what will fit) and then manually cutting and pasting to the SD card w/ axim file explorer.
