vdub error trying to encode mpg2 to divx
Ok.. i'm running vdub 1.5.4, which i've opened mpg2 before.. this is from a standard mpg2 svcd rip from a dvd.. for some reason when i try to save the file to divx i get the following:
cannot start video compression:
The source image format is not acceptable.
(error code -2)
any idea? This is strange cuz other mpg2 files work just fine.

I don't know what the problem is, but whenever I get an error problem with vdub, I have used the trial version of Dr. Divx. It seems like it can take any format. Give it a try, it is pretty good.

I figured it out. the error was do to the resolution. What I was doing was first cropping the video (to take out black bars) then resizing. the resize i did to give me height and width that were divisible by 16, however the cropping that i did before the resize ended up with resolution that wasnt divisible. I thought this didn't matter since i figured it was the resulting final resolution that mattered, but apparenlty not. i changed hte crop a bit so the height was divisible by 16 and all is good now.

Well, that is good, whatever it means! I wouldn't have figured out that problem, so feel proud of yourself.

all i'm saying is that if you're using any filter in vdub that changes your resolution, make sure the resolution is divisible by 16 (for both height and width).
so if you've got 2 filters: null transform (for cropping) and resize, the outputted resolution for each filter has to be divisible by 16.
i at first thought it was a problem with the mpg2 file, however since i had done alot of mpg2 (svcd compliant) file encodes I was at a loss to figure it out.. glad I did though!

That's where my favorite SmartResizer filter comes in - I can specify that the resolution will always be divisible by 16.
And I never add a Null Transform filter to crop - I do it directly in the SmartResize filter.

I've had vdub problems too, it crashes when I select the video:compression menu. Dr. Divx appears to work thus far (took a 2hr movie down to 150MB).

I've tried re-installing the codec and no joy. When I don't go to the compression menu, vdub does run but it creates unworkably huge files and stops when it hits the 4GB file size barrier. I'd love to get it running as opposed to paying $50 for Dr. Divx.

are you using the latest verison of vdub . it's 1.5.4. Let me get this right.. so you open vdub, open your file (mpg or whatever) then click on video and select compression and it crashes at that point? or can you select the divx 5.05 codec and it crashes then?

yep. that's where it crashes. Never get the chance to select the codec. I'm using latest version 1.5.4 as well. I had the previous version installed which had the same error. I uninstalled it and then installed 1.5.4. I've uninstalled and reinstalled that too to no good end.

do you have an older version of divx installed as well (e.g. 3.x)? Or, do you have any custom codec packs installed? Just shootin out ideas as I haven't had a crash in vdub like the one you've described. You might wanna post a new thread detailing your problem to get some more answers from other members also.
