I have kind of a newbie question...

I downloaded the Simpsons video, and am playing it with WMP.

When there is not a lot of movement in the scene, the picture is clear. But when there is movement, the picture is pixel-y (I know that's not a word, I hope you know what I mean...) and kind of fuzzy until the movement slows down.

Is that the way everyone sees it on the Axim, or do you all get better results than that?

first thing anyone is gonna say to you is to stick to divx avi files and watch them with pocketMVP.

the pixelation that you're getting could be from using a low bitrate when encoding. Did you encode the file yourself? If so what settings did you use in windows media encoder?

I didn't do any encoding or change any settings. I'm too dense for that; despite the helpful info here, I still can't grasp it.

I just downloaded it straight from here and play it through WMP9.

If you're comparing it to the video running on your pc, don't forget that WMP on PC has a lot of filters to clear up videos, but with 240x320 pixels, Pocket WMP can't do too much to enhance the video.

So to play the movie (as-is, as downloaded) and to use WMP on the Axim to play it...crappy results are the norm?

She's referring to that free Simpsons episode we were discussing in a different thread, I suspect. And yes, that episode was encoded at a very low bitrate, and frankly -- it's crap.

Don't fret, beckysma, you can get better looking movies for Pocket WMP, and by encoding your own DivX movies for PocketMVP you can get some excellent ones. (For that matter, if you have a WM2003 device, you can encode some excellent videos for Pocket WMP9)

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I don't have a DVD on my desktop, so I'm left to try and work with whatever movies I can get my hands on. Where can I get better looking movies?

I have some movies from Pocket PC films, too. They aren't that great either on the Axim using WMP. They are WMA files. Should I try to convert them to something else?

No - you can't take a video that looks poor, and 'convert' it to a better-looking one.

My solution was: if I found something I liked on PocketMovies or anywhere else, if they provided a link to the source movie I would download that instead and re-encode it myself. Most of the downloadable movies out there are at a lower quality than I like, and most seem to be MPEG anyway - yuck.

I found the quality ok if I held it a little further away. When I held it close, it was rough looking, I moved it back a little further it looked alot better.
